Gessopalena – History, Gypsum and Landscape

Gessopalena is a destination for travelers who want to understand Italian local history not only through individual sights, but through a townscape that has developed over time. In the historic center, the Chiesa dell’Annunziata is probably the oldest place of worship in Gessopalena. A historic place built from gypsum

The town’s distinctive history is immediately apparent in its architecture: the old village of Gessopalena was built entirely from gypsum. The original settlement dates back approximately to the year 1000. The Museo del Gesso illustrates how closely geology, craftsmanship and everyday life were connected. It is housed in restored and protected homes as well as underground spaces and presents the production cycles of gypsum, including various types of quarries and kilns. The largest Trappeto is also carved into the gypsum cliff.

Culture between the Borgo and the Majella

An important cultural focal point is the Sacra Rappresentazione del Mercoledì Santo. For more than 50 years, it has brought the Passion of Christ back to life. More than 150 people take part in historical costumes; musicians, choirs and dancers are also part of the performance. The ruins of the ancient rock settlement opposite the Majella provide the setting for the crucifixion scenes. The town’s culture of remembrance also includes the Strage di Sant’Agata di Gessopalena, a tragic event that took place on January 21, 1944, during the Second World War. Another attraction is the ORIZZONTI art installation in Contrada Morgia in Gessopalena.
