Ofena: Churches, Olive Groves and Viticulture

Ofena is situated on a hill at the upper edge of the Valle del Tirino and within Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. Its location combines a clearly defined natural setting with a town where culture, regional products and guided trails appeal to a variety of interests. Churches and medieval architecture

Ofena’s historic centre preserves a large part of its late-medieval architecture. The Chiesa di San Nicola di Bari is a medieval church whose interior was altered in the Baroque style after 1703. There is no admission fee, and the church is open during the day. This building therefore offers a direct combination of medieval fabric and later Baroque design.

The Chiesa di San Pietro in Criptis dates from the 12th century and has underground rooms known as „grotte“. Its portal was created by Silvestro da Ofena and bears the year 1196. Palazzo Cataldi-Madonna provides another architectural detail with its remarkable stone portal. Together, these sites offer several different approaches to Ofena’s older architecture.

Olive groves and viticulture

The hamlet of Piedi Cellara preserves some of the most significant ancient olive trees belonging to Ofena’s olive-growing heritage. During a guided walk through the olive groves there, visitors learn about the history of local olive growing, cultivation techniques and the characteristics of the extra virgin olive oil produced there. Afterwards, participants can sample local products with the farm’s extra virgin olive oil at a picnic in the olive grove. Here, the landscape and agricultural tradition are therefore closely connected with a specific visitor experience.

Ofena’s microclimate, characterised by Mediterranean temperatures, favours viticulture, particularly the production of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. VinOlia also focuses on wine and extra virgin olive oil: the event includes tastings, meetings with producers, workshops and outdoor activities. Wine and olive oil therefore represent two distinct culinary highlights.
