Pettorano Sul Gizio: Nature, History and Local Traditions

The nature reserve covers 3,162 hectares and lies entirely within the municipality of Pettorano Sul Gizio. It extends from the Gizio River at an elevation of 530 metres to Monte Genzana at 2,170 metres. Its landscapes include the river environments of the Gizio and Torrente Riaccio, species-rich mixed forests dominated by downy oaks and hornbeams, beech forests, subalpine krummholz and shrub communities, and alpine summit meadows. The Marsican brown bear (Ursus arctos marsicanus) and the wolf (Canis lupus) occur in the reserve and surrounding areas; both are designated as species of Community interest under EU directives.

Castles, Museums and Craft History

Castello Cantelmo houses the Museo del Territorio. It explores the historical and environmental relationship between people and nature. The Parco di Archeologia Industriale is also closely connected with the Gizio. It includes three mills with horizontal water wheels – De Stephanis, Cantelmo and Comunale – as well as a fulling or hammer mill belonging to the Cantelmo family. Water diversion channels and control structures with sluice gates complete this system. The park also includes the Gizio River and its springs, a botanical garden with a picnic area, and a constructed wetland.

Historic Centre with Distinctive Details

The centre preserves sections of the defensive wall and five surviving entrance gates: Porta San Nicola, Porta Mulino, Porta Santa Margherita, Porta San Marco and Porta Cencio. The Chiesa della Madonna della Libera has a marble altar with a painting of the Madonna della Libera. The Chiesa di San Nicola is one of the oldest churches in the town and is first documented in a papal document issued by Paschal II in 1112; its façade architrave bears an inscription dating from the 12th to the 13th century. The Chiesa di San Giovanni is first documented in records from 1183 and 1188 and preserves a stone holy-water font.

The Chiesa di San Rocco was built after the plague that severely decimated the population in 1656. It stands in the town centre and therefore not outside the city walls, as was otherwise customary for churches with this dedication. The Chiesa Madre has a rectangular portal that was moved here from the Convento del Carmine in 1842. Reliefs of fantastic animals and plant motifs adorn the portal, while two fully sculpted lions support the arch. La Castaldina was originally the residence of the Castaldo, the administrator of the Cantelmo family; an alteration in the 18th century gave it its characteristic late Baroque appearance. In its atrium, Palazzo Croce preserves an epigraphic fragment of the Edictum Diocletiani.

Trails, Getting There and Local Traditions

The Via Napoleonica follows the Gizio Valley from Sulmona to the Piano delle Cinquemiglia. From Sulmona, the area around Pettorano Sul Gizio could be reached along both banks of the Gizio. From Sulmona railway station, you can continue by TUA bus; only a few services run each day. For a brief experience of nature, Trail 5 begins near Ponte della Vittoria south of the town at an elevation of 600 metres and leads to the cascades of Torrente Riaccio.

The New Year's Eve tradition includes a serenade of good wishes: groups of women walk through the town singing on New Year's night. The Sagra della Polenta has been documented in Pettorano Sul Gizio since the early 1960s. Its centrepiece is a traditional dish from the Valle Peligna made from corn, enhanced with a pork sauce. During Carnival, a masked procession travels on foot and on festively decorated horses, mules and donkeys to Piazza della Prece in the town centre, where the first reading of the testament takes place.
