Villetta Barrea: Nature, Lake and History

Villetta Barrea lies in the heart of the Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise. Lago di Barrea is recognised as a wetland of international importance and has been included in the Ramsar Convention directory since 1977. It is a resting and feeding area for migratory birds, including great crebes, little grebes, mallards, teal, Eurasian wigeons, pochards and coots.

Hiking trails with different levels of difficulty

For a shorter ascent, the Itinerario numero 1 (Pineta Zappini–Via Monumento ai Caduti) is a good option. The easy hike begins at Piazzetta Tre Pizzi, takes 25 minutes uphill and covers 160 metres of elevation gain. The trail leads to a viewpoint overlooking Serra Chiarano, Lago di Barrea, Barrea and the Monti della Camosciara.

Itinerario numero 2 (Villetta Barrea–Vaiazzone–Piazzale Camosciara) is also an easy ascent from Piazzetta Tre Pizzi, with an uphill time of 60 minutes. It reaches the Camosciara amphitheatre, a natural habitat for deer, wild boar and Abruzzo chamois. Itinerario numero 4 (Villetta Barrea–Torrente Profluo–Fonte delle Felci) is designed as an easy nature trail starting from Tre Pizzi and also has an uphill time of 60 minutes.

If you would like to allow more time for a hike, Itinerario numero 3 (Villetta Barrea–Km. 9.300–La Montagnola) is a moderately difficult route that climbs for two and a half hours. The route to La Montagnola passes through a scientifically intact forest with beech trees and the black pine characteristic of Villetta Barrea. The different levels of difficulty and uphill times help you adapt your daily planning to the desired level of challenge.

Lake, Wildlife and Trails

From Villetta Barrea, Lago di Barrea and the cycling and walking trails running along both shores are accessible. Visitors can go horseback riding on Lago di Barrea. Villetta Barrea also offers opportunities to observe bears and chamois. Deer and fawns can also be observed as they graze or cool off in the river.

Historical Traces in the Village

The Museo della Torre Medievale is housed in a 15th-century round tower in the historic centre of Villetta Barrea. It is dedicated to the history of the former parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, which was destroyed by the 1915 Marsica earthquake. The present-day village developed around a small 14th-century castle built in the upper part of the village.

The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo stands on the former site of the Sant’Angelo in Barreggio monastery. The small church was built around 1500 on the ruins of this former monastery. The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo also houses the Ciborio del Monastero di Sant'Angelo in Barreggio.

Transhumance and Local Products

The Museo della Transumanza e Bottega del Buon Gusto is located in the 19th-century rural building known as “Il Baraccone”. It has a tasting area and presents food, wine and handicraft products associated with transhumance. The Feast of San Sebastiano, celebrated in Villetta Barrea every year on 20 January, is a fixed event. People gather around a fire and roast sausages in the square in front of the church.
