Gignod is located on a high plateau at the foot of Punta Chaligne. From here, panoramic views extend across the mountains of the Valpelline Valley and the Swiss Grand Combin massif. At the same time, the Via Francigena passes through the village. Gignod therefore brings together mountain landscapes, a pilgrimage route and regional history—topics that you can weigh differently when choosing accommodation and planning individual excursions.

Between the Pilgrimage Route and Medieval History

The section of the Via Francigena in Gignod follows old paths associated with the Salassi, the Romans and medieval pilgrims on their way to Rome. Another historical connection is provided by the medieval square tower. It dates from around the 11th or 12th century and represents the former role of the village in controlling transalpine traffic on the road to the Swiss Valais. In the Church of Sant'Ilario, you will find 15th-century frescoes, including a Descent from the Cross, a Madonna and prophets with Gothic scrolls bearing inscriptions.

The Maison de l’Artisanat International also connects the village with culture. The exhibition centre for temporary exhibitions of local and international crafts, opened in 2016, is located in the ancient Casaforte Caravex. Hiking, Mountain Biking and Ski Touring

In summer, numerous marked hiking trails of varying difficulty lead through nature from Gignod, including routes to the Rifugio Chaligne. Mountain-bike routes run through the surrounding forests and along the Ru Neuf, an old irrigation channel. Arsanières is also home to a 9-hole golf course on a natural slope in a particularly impressive landscape.

The colder season is also part of the possible range of experiences around Punta Chaligne: in winter and spring, ski tourers can climb the 2,608-metre summit. Festivals with Religious and Culinary Connections

Every year on 16 August, a procession takes place in Gignod to Punta Chaligne. It originated as a thanksgiving event held by survivors of the 17th-century plague and falls on the feast day of Saint Roch. The Fête du Teteun provides another local focus. This gastronomic festival honours Teteun, a sausage speciality typical of the area, made from salted, prepared and seasoned cow udder. Various Teteun specialities can be sampled on Saturday evening and Sunday.
