Verrand: Village Square, Trails and Alpine Architecture

On Verrand’s village square stands a stone fountain and washhouse with two basins dating from 1882. A small church dating from the 17th century also stands on the village square. Together, the two buildings give a walk through the village a clear historical focus, without requiring you to plan long distances between the sights.

The old Grand Bâtiment house also stands in the village of Verrand and is known by the names “grand bâtiment” and “Verrand castle”. Its façade features Gothic windows made of worked stone. The chapels of the Verrand hamlet preserve old carved and painted wooden statues made between the 14th and 16th centuries. In Pré-Saint-Didier, the parish church of Saint Lawrence has one of the oldest Romanesque bell towers in the region.

Buildings with Alpine Character

Villa Bruno is located in the Verrand district of Pré-Saint-Didier and is inspired by the local rural building types. The building uses dry-stone walls, wood for the supporting structure and cladding, and a slate roof. This roof is reminiscent of an Alpine village building on a slope used for alpine pasture farming. Villa Bruno is considered one of the first buildings to reinterpret themes from traditional architecture without explicitly referring to the wooden rascard.

Routes with Different Accents

Verrand offers several clearly distinct options for walks and hikes. The La Puscerà circular route begins and ends in Verrand at an elevation of 1,239 metres and leads to the Chapelle Grange votive chapel. Another route runs from Verrand to Plagnoley and back. It is short and not difficult, although it has steep sections in places and offers fairly good panoramic views. In the municipality of Pré-Saint-Didier, a route passes through the lower section of the gorge: from the old bridge over the Dora-di-Verney stream, it climbs uphill through the forest for about 40 minutes.

Views and Thermal Springs

The “Belvedere” viewpoint offers a view of Mont Blanc and Verrand. In the municipality of Pré-Saint-Didier, two thermal springs lie near the old bridge in an artificial cave dating from the 16th century. In this cave, the area’s thermal waters emerge at 37 °C at the foot of the Orrido di Pré-Saint-Didier, above the confluence of the Varney torrent and the Dora Baltea.

Festival Tradition and Nearby Destinations

The traditional feast of the patron saint, Sant’Anna, is celebrated in Verrand. The playground in the Verrand district offers a view of the Mont Blanc range, giving a stay outdoors its own distinctive character. Pré-Saint-Didier is only a few kilometres from the ski resorts of Courmayeur and La Thuile. When planning your trip, you can therefore take into account both Verrand’s trails and buildings and other destinations in the municipality and the surrounding area.
