Alberobello: Discover Trulli, Districts and Culture

Alberobello is shaped above all by its trulli, including buildings that date back to the mid-14th century. Their characteristic roofs are pyramid-, dome- or cone-shaped and made from overlapping limestone slabs. On 5 December 1996, the trulli of Alberobello were declared a World Heritage site. Casa D’Amore also introduces an important transitional phase: construction began on 22 June 1797, and it was the first house officially built with mortar. At the same time, it represents an architectural transition from the first trullo houses to the residential buildings of the 19th century.

The Museo dell’Olio di Alberobello displays evidence of the local rural culture from the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century, above all equipment used for grinding olives. The museum is open by appointment. The Museo del Territorio “Casa Pezzolla” is also located in the vicinity of Alberobello.

The city’s religious tradition includes the patron saint festival of Saints Cosmas and Damian, celebrated in Alberobello every year on 26 and 27 September. Many worshippers traditionally reach the sanctuary of the Basilica Minore dei SS Medici Cosma e Damiano on foot for the entire journey.
