Historic Centre and Rural Heritage

In the historic centre, La Rotte marks the oldest part of Rignano Garganico. Only a cylindrical tower remains today of the ancient Byzantine castle. Palazzo Baronale is a Baroque palace that incorporated the ancient 11th- to 12th-century castle during the first half of the 18th century. Another historic highlight is Masseria Palagano: the monumental fortified farmhouse is considered particularly valuable from an architectural perspective, and its original structure dates from the 18th century; today, it is a thriving agriturismo.

Landscape, Cave and Panoramic Views

The rural character of the town can be seen at Grotta Paglicci. It is located in the countryside of Rignano Garganico on the eastern side of the Vallone Settepenne. From the Belvedere of Rignano Garganico, the expansive view stretches across the Tavoliere, from the hills of the Subappennino to the distant summit of the Majella. The rural architecture reflects the slopes on the southern side of the promontory and the adjoining areas of the Tavoliere, which were the scene of transhumance for centuries.

Trails between the Town and the Countryside

The Tratturello Motta–Villanova runs through the area of Rignano Garganico. For visitors who enjoy combining culture and landscapes, the guides of the Centro Studi Paglicci accompany them on an impressive route from the town centre through the Vallone Settepende to the Grotta Paglicci archaeological site.

Pilgrimage and Festivals Throughout the Year

The pilgrimage to the Madonna di Cristo chapel takes place on the Tuesday after Easter. The chapel is located about 6 km away on the road from Rignano to Foggia. After the services and procession, a picnic ritual with music, singing and dancing takes place in the surrounding plain.

During the Fanoje, the procession carrying the statue of Saint Joseph passes through the town's streets. Large devotional bonfires, also known as “Fanoje”, are lit in every neighbourhood. The living nativity scene was created in 1998 and followed a route through the alleyways of the medieval historic centre in a Christmas atmosphere.

Local Cuisine and Shared Experiences

Culinary traditions also shape Rignano Garganico. The Sagra della Carne di Capra e della Musciska is a long-standing culinary festival focused on goat meat and Musciska, combining local customs, food and music. The two-day CUNZ! Gargano Food Fest, which is open to everyone, includes cooking workshops and trekking tours with foraging.
