Castle and churches: historical traces

The visible remains of the Castello Imperiale include sections of the ring wall and two cylindrical towers.

The churches offer different architectural and artistic points of interest. The Chiesa Matrice San Nicola dates back to a Norman complex and has the layout of a Latin cross, three naves and a Baroque design. The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo houses a 15th-century triptych depicting saints and an 18th-century Pietà statue. The Chiesa di Sant'Andrea Apostolo preserves a 17th-century wooden crucifix and a wooden choir. The Norman origins of the Chiesa Matrice San Nicola thus stand alongside works of art from the 15th, 17th and 18th centuries. The three churches therefore differ in their architectural form, furnishings and historical period.

Stonework, olive mill and festival tradition

The Parco Urbano delle Opere in Pietra preserves a sculptural heritage from Sant'Agata, created by local stonemasons.

An old olive mill from the 16th century is well preserved in Sant'Agata di Puglia. Sant'Agata di Puglia is part of the Strada dell'Olio Extravergine d'Oliva DOP Dauno. Thus, a preserved 16th-century building meets inclusion in the Strada dell'Olio Extravergine d'Oliva DOP Dauno.

Sant'Agata di Puglia celebrates its patron saint's feast every year on February 5 in honor of Saint Agatha, the town's patron saint. On the same day, the “Agatine” go from door to door wearing tunics and cloaks in the colors of the saint's statue and distribute blessed breads shaped like breasts to the families. For scheduling purposes, February 5 is the town's fixed festival date.

Forests, river and the SP 101

Below Sant'Agata di Puglia, in the plain located there, are the remains of a three-arch Roman bridge over the Calaggio River. The bridge remains are therefore located below the town in the plain along the Calaggio.
