Alliste Between Churches, Coast and History

Alliste combines impressive traces of its past with coastal locations within the municipality. Churches, aristocratic palaces and remains of the historic walls shape its cultural side, while Capilungo and Posto Rosso add their own distinctive features with rocky coastline, coves and unique experiences on the water.

Churches and historical traces

The Church of San Quintino was founded in 1455 directly outside the town walls of Alliste. Inside, it preserves five paintings by Giovanni Battista Lama depicting the life of the saint. In this way, the building combines its early history with a clearly recognisable artistic character.

The Church of San Giuseppe also reaches far back into the town’s history: it was first mentioned in 1452 and was the parish church of Alliste until 1875. On the hill above Alliste stands the Church of Madonna dell’Alto, which was built between the 8th and 9th centuries. Its location gives it a particularly prominent place within the historic townscape.

Further traces can be seen directly in the town. In Via Roma, remains of Alliste’s historic walls are still visible. The historic centre is also home to aristocratic palaces built in the 18th century, featuring ornate façades and grand decorations. A walk through Alliste thus offers a succession of religious buildings, traces of fortifications and representative architecture.

Rocky coastline and coves

The municipality of Alliste includes Capilungo, with a rocky coastline, small easily accessible coves and crystal-clear water. The coastal landscape focuses less on a continuous beach and more on individual coves and rocky stretches. Torre Sinfonò Cove is also located near Capilungo and is considered a place for diving.

Posto Rosso has a different coastal character. There, the coastline is marked by a succession of small, freely accessible coves. Posto Rosso also has a freshwater spring that cools the sea. This feature adds a geological and natural aspect to the way this stretch of coast is experienced.

Festivals and events on specified dates

The Church of Madonna dell’Alto is also associated with a recurring festival: the Feast of Madonna dell’Alto takes place on the first Sunday after Easter. As part of the celebrations in honour of the patron saint San Quintino Martire, a market fair was held in Alliste from 31 October to 1 November 2024. This date refers to a specific past event and does not constitute a general promise of future events.
