Nardò: Baroque, Nature and Salento Culture
Nardò between Baroque and nature
Nardò showcases a combination of Baroque urban design, historic religious buildings, museums and distinctive landscapes. In the historic centre, Baroque architecture, Piazza Salandra and numerous churches of historical and architectural significance shape the cityscape.
Landscape and distinctive natural formations
The Parco Naturale Regionale di Porto Selvaggio covers 1,100 hectares in the Nardò area. Around Nardò, karstification at Palude del Capitano has created so-called Spunnulate: caves with collapsed ceilings in which brackish-water ponds have formed.
Alongside the Castello degli Acquaviva, the Villa Comunale is home to a 19th-century botanical garden, one of the oldest in Salento.
Architecture, squares and religious buildings
The historic centre is also home to the Teatro Comunale, a 19th-century cultural theatre. The cathedral of Beata Vergine Maria Santissima Assunta was built in 1080 by the Norman Count Goffredo; it houses a 13th-century wooden crucifix known as Cristo Nero. The Chiesa di San Domenico was built in 1500 for the Dominican order.
Museums and history
The Museo della città e del territorio is located on the mezzanine floor of Castello Acquaviva-D’Aragona. It offers guided tours and organises events, educational workshops, courses and experiential tours. The Museo della Preistoria is housed in the former Sant’Antonio da Padova monastery; its largest exhibition section consists of finds from caves in the Parco Regionale di Porto Selvaggio e Palude del Capitano.
The Jewish presence in Nardò has been documented since the 11th century and re-emerged during the post-war period between 1944 and 1947. The historic Piazza delle Legne is marked by the Guglia dell’Immacolata and is home to the Sedile, the Chiesa di San Trifone, the former university building, later used as a praetorium, and the Fontana del Toro.
Food and activities
La Vetrina del gusto is a tasting venue in the heart of the city overlooking Piazza Salandra, presenting the area through its local products, colours and flavours.
The Cavalcata Storica is a traditional costumed procession through the historic centre of Nardò. It attracts residents and visitors every year and conveys an impression of Nardò’s history. For physical activity, trekking routes range from easy outdoor walks to challenging trails; there are also cycle paths in the city centre as well as routes leading to the city’s marinas.
The Acquario del Salento is a living museum featuring fish, molluscs and other forms of marine life. Around Nardò, diving excursions to caves, wrecks, shoals and rock walls are offered for divers with licences ranging from beginner level to technical levels.
When choosing a hotel in Nardò, you can consider the focus of your trip: museums, squares and churches are suited to a culture-oriented stay, while the park, Spunnulate, trekking, cycle paths and maritime experiences appeal to other interests.
