The Byzantine, three-aisled Cripta Madonna della Grotta

The Cripta Madonna della Grotta is a Byzantine crypt dating from the 13th century. It was carved into tuff and divided into three aisles. The Cripta Madonna della Grotta preserves a small bell tower. It is located on Largo della Fiera at the edge of Ortelle's town center. Tuff and the three-aisled layout define the architectural character of this sacred site. The crypt's 13th-century date predates the year 1653 of the old parish church and the second half of the 18th century, when the Chiesa di San Vito e Santa Marina was built.

Churches and their different construction periods

The churches of Ortelle highlight different historical periods. Ortelle's Chiesa Madre is dedicated to San Giorgio; its portal is crowned by a blessing figure of Christ. The Chiesa di San Vito e Santa Marina was built in the second half of the 18th century. Niches run along its side. Ortelle's old parish church was built in 1653 in the Baroque style and contains valuable altars and paintings from the 18th century. The churches' construction periods therefore range from 1653 to the second half of the 18th century.

Square between sacred buildings with festival traditions

An equipped square lies between the Chiesa di San Vito e Santa Marina and the Cripta Madonna della Grotta. The town's festivals and Sagra events take place there. The square spatially connects the two sacred sites with Ortelle's festive activities. Its position between the two buildings is a distinct spatial feature within the town.

For 2023, the Fiera Regionale di San Vito is associated with the period from October 19, 2023, to October 22, 2023. Palazzo Rizzelli is another attraction in Ortelle.
