Historical Layers and Distinctive Buildings

The Cattedrale di San Gerardo features an 18th-century façade designed by the architect Magri. Inside, it preserves remains from the 5th to 6th centuries attributed to the Sacellum of Sant'Oronzo. It also has a stone bell tower dating from its construction phase in the 12th to 13th centuries. Thus, a single building brings together several clearly distinct periods.

The Torre Guevara is the surviving part of a castle from the 10th or 11th century. Santa Maria del Sepolcro is considered a settlement of the Knights Templar built at the beginning of the 12th century. Sant'Antonio La Macchia is a hermitage of the Capuchins built in 1530, situated among green, tree-lined paths. Each of these three sites represents a different historical trace and distinct forms of architecture and surroundings.

The Teatro Stabile opened in 1881 with a performance of La Traviata. The Ponte San Vito preserves foundations from the Roman era and is connected with the construction of the Roman Via Herculia. Villa Malvaccaro is the only Roman villa recovered in the Potenza area. It has a triclinium with a mosaic floor whose central medallion depicts the Three Graces.

Archaeology and Art in Potenza

The Museo Archeologico Provinciale displays artworks from Hellenistic Metapontum, Magna Graecia and Lucania. The Pinacoteca Provinciale presents a permanent anthological art exhibition dedicated to Concetto Valente.

The Museo Archeologico Nazionale della Basilicata Dinu Adamesteanu is housed in Palazzo Loffredo and presents important research findings from northern and central Basilicata. Palazzo Loffredo is a palace in the immediate vicinity of Potenza. The museum collection includes child burials from Vaglio di Basilicata dating from 430 BC.

The Città Narrata visitor project divides Potenza into 56 sites and three routes. Along the routes, Città Narrata uses panels with QR codes providing access to multimedia content and audio stories. The historic route leads from the Cattedrale di San Gerardo to the Scale del Popolo through medieval gates, churches and palaces.

Another Città Narrata route leads to inscriptions associated with ancient Potentia. The various routes allow you to shape your walk according to your preferred focus: medieval architecture, ancient traces or a narrative approach to the place.

Walks along the Basento and Views

The Parco fluviale del Basento offers a riverside walking path between the Ponte San Vito and the Ponte Musmeci. A footpath along the Basento is suitable for walks and outdoor runs. The Ponte Musmeci is a work of art created by engineer Sergio Musmeci in the late 1960s. Together with the Roman foundations of the Ponte San Vito, this creates a section where the river landscape, engineering and archaeology meet directly.

Several mountains are located around Potenza: Monte Grosso is a mountain in the vicinity of Potenza, as are Serra la Neviera, Serranetta and Il Ciglio. From Montereale, there are expansive views of Potenza and the Lucanian Apennines.
