Crotone amid ancient traces and marine nature

Crotone combines ancient history, mathematical and philosophical themes, and a coastal landscape. Ancient Traces and Archaeological Collections

At Capo Colonna, the Temple of Hera Lacinia was built between 480 and 470 BC; only a single column remains. The Archaeological Museum of Capo Colonna divides its exhibition into three sections: the Roman settlement, finds from the sanctuary area, and underwater finds from the coast of Crotone. This creates a contrast between a preserved individual remnant and groups of finds from different historical and maritime contexts.

The Museo e Giardini di Pitagora offers a different direction. It is the first open-air museum in the city of Crotone and is dedicated to science, mathematics and philosophy. The Giardini di Pitagora cover 18 hectares and contain 17 mathematical, philosophical and scientific exhibits, some of which are based on the philosophy and ideas of Pythagoras and other philosophers.

At the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Crotone, the themes extend back to the Neolithic period: among other things, stone axes and obsidian scrapers from Petilia Policastro are on display. A Minoan-Mycenaean pottery fragment is considered exceptionally significant. The Iron Age section includes jars with bulging bodies and narrow necks, fibulae of various forms, and rare tools from graves near Cirò.

The BPER archaeological urban area, also known as “Sito BPER”, belongs to the southern quarter of ancient Kroton. It preserves an archaeological sequence with traces from the Bronze Age and Iron Age, as well as visible phases of use from the founding phases of the Greek colony through the 12th century CE.

Sea, Beaches and Protected Habitats

The Area Marina Protetta Capo Rizzuto also extends to Crotone. Its seabed features extensive meadows of Posidonia oceanica as well as marine habitats that provide protection for many animal species. The combination of the protected area, seabed and marine habitats introduces a natural dimension that meaningfully complements the cultural themes.

Crotone offers sandy beaches and crystal-clear sea for swimming, sunbathing and water sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing. In this way, the sea complements the historical and scientific themes with swimming, sunbathing and water sports.

Experience Science Interactively

For an interactive approach to mathematics, “Ludomatica” is considered the only interactive mathematics exhibition in southern Italy. It provides an additional focus for visitors who want to do more than simply view scientific content.
