Melissa: Medieval Historic Center, Wine and Torre Melissa

Melissa lies on a rocky spur a few kilometers from the sea. The settlement is laid out in terraces on a rocky hilltop; vineyards and gentle hills shape the landscape along the approach. The historic center is crossed by narrow streets that can only be explored on foot once you have parked your car. This gives you a clear distinction between the old town center and the Torre Melissa district.

Medieval heritage on the hilltop

Melissa's medieval heritage is reflected in the massive town walls and the remains of an old castle on the upper rocky ridge, with the castle ruins including three round towers. The Chiesa di San Giacomo is located in the upper part of the town. It is Melissa's oldest church, dates from the early Middle Ages and, with its original structure—a so-called pieve—probably represents the starting point for the first settlement core of the historic center.

The Chiesa della Madonna dell'Audienza is also part of the history of the hilltop: it was built in 1672 at its summit, outside the walls. The Chiesa di San Nicola is also located in the historic town center and is one of Melissa's oldest buildings. For centuries, its square was the center of activities and the heart of the community.

Museums and local traditions

Melissa has a photography museum dedicated to the artist Ernesto Treccani. The Museo del Vino is located in the historic center near the Chiesa di San Giacomo. Next to this church is the Vecchio Frantoio Oleario, where you can learn about the traditional process of cold extraction of olive oil. In the Torre Melissa district, the Museo della Civiltà Contadina di Melissa displays agricultural and pastoral tools, recreated rural living quarters, as well as exhibits on weaving and ceramics. The Torre Aragonese, a fortified tower from the 16th-century Aragonese period, is also located in Torre Melissa.

Cuisine, wine and festivals

Melissa's traditional cuisine includes sardella, homemade pasta with meat or legume sauces, metiturisca, which is typical of the harvest season, stigliole, and salted cod with peppers. Thanks to its wine production, Melissa belongs to the Città del Vino network. Activities associated with Melissa include wine tastings at local wineries.

The most important religious festival in the center of Melissa is the celebration in honor of San Francesco di Paola. It takes place from August 1 to 3 and features three days of processions, a marching band formed by children and young people from Melissa, traditional games and music. In the first days of August, the Festa del Grano is also held in the hamlet of Mannà, with food stalls and musical performances.
