Bagnara Calabra between Coast, Trails and History

Bagnara Calabra combines coast, trails, historic buildings and maritime tradition. It therefore appeals to a variety of interests: coastal caves, boat trips, hiking trails, viewpoints and the history of swordfish fishing.

Coast and Boat Excursions

Grotta del Monaco is one of the well-known natural coastal caves near Bagnara Calabra and is used as a destination for boat trips in summer. The marina in Bagnara’s Marinella district is a starting point for mini-cruises to the Aeolian Islands. The coast and maritime excursions therefore form a distinct part of a stay.

Trails of Different Lengths

The final section of the Sentiero del Tracciolino is also known as the Sentiero del Vino and Sentiero dei Francesi, is classified as a category E hiking trail, is 6 km long and can be completed in about four hours. It leads to a slope overlooking Bagnara and the Costa Viola and is the most demanding part of the entire route. The Sentiero Marturano is an uphill trail of approximately 0.86 km that connects the Marinella district with Porelli and provides direct access to the Belvedere. Fortifications and Architectural History

Torre di Capo Rocchi is attributed to the 14th century or, at the latest, the 15th century; due to its slender geometry, it is also dated to the period from 1268 to 1442. Castello Ducale Ruffo, also known as Castello Emmarita or Palazzo ducale Ruffo, is an ancient fortification on the Marturano promontory in the upper part of Bagnara. As a Norman fortress, it was built around the 11th century on the orders of Count Ruggero, the future King Ruggero II of the Regnum Siciliae, to repel Saracen incursions.

Ponte Caravilla was built in 1825; its name derives from the engineer who designed it. Anfiteatro Belvedere is a viewpoint in Bagnara Calabra. The town’s history thus ranges from medieval fortifications to a specifically dated structure and combines historical themes with views of the surrounding area.

Swordfish Fishing as a Historical Tradition

Swordfish fishing and swordfish hunting were an important economic foundation for many families in Bagnara Calabra for centuries and are part of the town’s historic sociocultural tradition. In this traditional swordfish fishery, the felucca is the typical boat used; it is a modern development of the smaller boat type known as the “Luntro”. The maritime history thus also demonstrates the importance of the sea to the lives of many families.
