Monasterace combines ancient remains, medieval architectural history, coastal landscapes and lively processions. Between the Archaeological Park of Kaulon, the Castello di Monasterace, the hills of Campomarzo and the religious festivals, a varied picture of the town emerges. Depending on whether you are more interested in archaeology, landscapes, local history or traditions, you can set different priorities for your stay.

Ancient Traces near Kaulon

The Archaeological Park of Kaulon in Monasterace Marina lies near the Punta Stilo promontory, on the site of the ancient colonial centre of Kaulon, founded by Achaean Crotonians. The park contains the remains of a Doric peripteral temple dating from 470 to 460 BC. The bronze inscription tablet known as the Tabula Cauloniensis also dates from these years. It bears a dedication to Zeus in the Achaean alphabet. The Casa del Drago takes its name from the dragon motif of a mosaic that originally lay at the threshold of a banquet hall and is now exhibited in the museum.

From the Baths to the Medieval Castle

The Terme di Nannon include a mosaic floor featuring the motif “Dragons and Dolphins”, dated to the period of Agathocles of Syracuse, between 316 and 289 BC. Guided tours with archaeologists and local guides are planned for the Terme di Nannon. A later chapter of the town’s history is represented by the Castello di Monasterace: the medieval castle has Byzantine, Norman and feudal historical associations. It was built between the 10th and 11th centuries during the Byzantine occupation as a defensive system against Saracen attacks. The present structure dates largely from the 16th century; its square plan, four corner towers and central courtyard define the building. The historic centre also has four imposing medieval town gates. The Parrocchiale di S. Croce preserves paintings from the 18th century.

Coast and Nature Trails

The landscape around Monasterace also offers clear options for planning your days. Natural and scenic attractions include a stretch of beach north of the town, on the border with Guardavalle. The Punta Stilo lighthouse was commissioned in 1895 and is located in the hamlet of Castellone, north of the marina settlement. The hills of Campomarzo are suitable for excursions and walks in nature.

Processions and Religious Festivals

Several dates and customs give local life a religious character. A cunfrunta di Pasqua is an Easter tradition in Monasterace that includes a procession. The celebration of the Madonna di Porto Salvo takes place on the last Sunday in June. The Madonna statue is transported by boat in a procession; the celebration is accompanied by a traditional mass that extends through the streets of the town centre. Monasterace also holds a procession every three years in honour of Saint Andrea Avellino, the patron saint of Monasterace. It covers around 20 kilometres across the entire municipal area, passing through fields, Fiumare and old paths. This route also includes the Fiumara Assi, which is often crossed on foot.

Orientation and Local Character

Monasterace Borgo can be reached via the SS 106 and/or the Ionian Railway. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore first decide which aspects of the town should shape your stay: the ancient sites near Kaulon, the castle and historic centre, the beach and Punta Stilo, walks in Campomarzo or the religious festivals. The town’s local historical character also includes its former name, Monte Arachi. This is associated with the production of veccie and pulses, adding a connection to local life to the archaeological and architectural themes.
