San Luca between Aspromonte, Polsi and literature

San Luca lies in the heart of Aspromonte National Park. The historic center is characterized by narrow, paved streets that originally served as footpaths; wide steps overcome the differences in elevation. The old network of paths and the location at altitude therefore directly shape the character of the town. If you are considering San Luca as a base, it is worth taking a look at this distinctive townscape as well as at the surrounding landscape and cultural traces.

Historic Center and Practical Orientation

San Luca’s visitor center is called Casa Fera. Access to the statue of Cristo Redentore is free and possible without architectural barriers. From San Luca, follow the signs to Aspromonte National Park to reach Montalto.

Aspromonte, Pietra Cappa and Madonna di Polsi

Pietra Cappa covers approximately four hectares, is 140 meters high and is considered Europe’s largest monolith. The distinctive rock represents the landscape dimension that characterizes Aspromonte. The Santuario della Madonna di Polsi lies at an altitude of 862 meters in a valley surrounded by mountains in the heart of Aspromonte and is crossed by the course of the Bonamico River.

Hiking on the Sentiero Calabria

The Polsi–San Luca section of the Sentiero Calabria runs from the Santuario della Madonna di Polsi along the Fiumara Buonamico to Lago Costantino and then continues on to San Luca. Another section, San Luca–Piani di Zervò, begins at Corrado Alvaro’s birthplace and leads uphill through San Luca’s old streets.

Historical Traces around San Luca

The parish church of Santa Maria della Pietà in San Luca was built in 1606. The Pietra Castello castle is among the early medieval cultural heritage remains of the Valli delle Grandi Pietre. In the village of Palazzi near San Luca are the remains of a Roman villa from the imperial period. The remains of Potamia recall the place that was destroyed by the earthquake in the second half of the 18th century. These sites lead through several historical periods without reducing San Luca to a single attraction.

Corrado Alvaro and His Birthplace

The building where Corrado Alvaro was born is home to the Fondazione Corrado Alvaro. It is dedicated to preserving the memory and cultural heritage of the writer, journalist and poet, as well as to studying, researching and promoting his work and southern Italian literature. The contemporary furnishings, his bedroom and his books are still preserved in Corrado Alvaro’s birthplace. His first work was “Polsi nell’arte, nella leggenda, nella storia”, a 60-page account of the history of Polsi published in 1912.

A Fixed Date in the Annual Calendar

On August 22, a caravan sets out on foot from San Luca to Madonna di Polsi, marking the beginning of the novena. The solemn feast of Madonna di Polsi takes place on September 2. These two dates also make the connection between San Luca and Madonna di Polsi visible in the religious calendar.
