Brognaturo between Lake Lacina and Local Culture
Lake Lacina lies at an altitude of 986 metres and extends across the municipalities of Brognaturo, Cardinale and San Sostene.
The Lacina–Ferdinandea hiking trail begins at Lacina on the SP 43 in Brognaturo. From Lacina, it is 13.5 kilometres long and takes approximately five hours. It follows an old mule track through wooded landscapes with numerous streams.
Hiking Trails from Lacina and along the SP 43
The Sentiero Fantasma della Baronessa circular trail begins and ends on the SP 43 leading from Brognaturo towards Serravalle. The trail offers Lake Lacina as a scenic backdrop.
The artificially created reservoir features an important biodiversity basin and contributes to the preservation of the autochthonous ecotypes of this area.
Sacred Art and Living Tradition
The sacred art of Brognaturo can be seen in several specific works. The parish church houses a 16th-century marble group of the Annunciation by Giovan Battista Mazzolo. In the Chiesa Matrice, you can see a wooden sculpture of Saint Joseph with the Christ Child and the Immaculate Conception from 1873 by Michele Amato.
The Feast of Madonna della Consolazione takes place on the first Sunday in September and on 5 February. During the festival period, the “focari”, meaning bonfires, are lit in the streets of Brognaturo on the night before the Thursday preceding the start of the novena. The “vedute” are a scenic sequence of images in which the religious devotion of the Brognaturo community unfolds through depictions of graces received and culminates in the apotheosis of the statue of Madonna della Consolazione.
Local craftsmanship also has its own distinctive profile: Brognaturo is associated with pipe making, with Domenico Grenci regarded as the foremost representative of this craft. At Palazzo Tiani, an entrance leads through a rusticated granite arch into an inner courtyard.
Orientation within the Regional Road Network
The present-day SS 110 state road runs near Brognaturo. It was formerly known as “Strada di Monte Cucco e Monte Pecoraro”. The 84-kilometre route connects Bivio Angitola on the Tyrrhenian coast with Monasterace Marina on the Ionian coast.
