Tropea lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea, on the western side of the Poro promontory and in the centre of the Costa degli Dei. The historic centre is situated on a steep cliff about 60 metres above the sea. At the same time, Tropea is associated with crystal-clear waters and white sand. Old Town on the Cliff
The historic centre of Tropea consists of a maze of lanes, small squares and open public spaces. This small-scale structure in particular makes a walk a form of exploration in its own right: you move between narrow paths and more spacious urban areas without the centre losing its historic character.
At the end of a walk through the historic centre lies Largo Migliarese, a viewing terrace facing the turquoise sea. Corso Vittorio Emanuele also offers beautiful panoramic views during a walk through Tropea's town centre. This allows you to make a town walk and panoramic views separate focal points of your day's plans.
History and Maritime Culture
The history of Tropea begins in the Roman era. The historic settlement was once surrounded by walls and fortified on one side; access was through defensive gates. These architectural traces give a walk through the town a clear historical context without limiting Tropea to a single era.
The Museo civico del Mare di Tropea, or MuMaT for short, is located in Palazzo Santa Chiara on Via Ospedale in Tropea. The museum displays remains of orcas and megalodons, meaning large marine predators. It also contains skeletons of particularly complete ancient ancestors of dugongs and of a Miocene whale, as well as two malacological collections.
A marine biology section displays shells, algae and skeletons. It illustrates the present-day marine flora and fauna of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Sea, Diving and Regional Cuisine
The underwater world in the waters off Tropea can be explored while diving; these waters are considered particularly rich in fish. This aspect appeals to travellers who want to experience their stay not only on the shore but also beneath the surface of the water.
The Sagra del pesce azzurro e della cipolla rossa di Tropea takes place in July. The festival celebrates the region's traditional cuisine. At the Sagra, visitors can sample numerous dishes made with red onion and bluefish. This gives Tropea's famous onion a tangible place in the town's culinary experience.

For June, July, August and September, a visiting period from 09:30 to 20:00 is scheduled at the Santuario Santa Maria dell’Isola.
