Discover Amorosi: Culture and Nature along the Volturno

Amorosi lies in a landscape shaped by the Volturno and Calore rivers: the town stretches along the left bank of the Volturno and the right bank of the Calore. At the same time, its history dates back to the 9th century. Those interested in Italian townscapes, religious art and archaeology will find several themes here that relate directly to the town.

The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo

In the town center stands the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo, the parish church of Amorosi. Its façade dates from the 18th century. Particularly characteristic is the three-story bell tower made of gray and yellow tuff. Above it rises a dome clad with yellow-green glazed majolica tiles. Inside too, a significant part of the visible art dates from the 18th and 19th centuries. This includes an altarpiece of the Madonna del Rosario and a painting depicting Saint Michael vanquishing the devil.

Palazzo Maturi and Italian History

Palazzo Maturi was built in 1775. One of its wings permanently houses the Polo Culturale e Museale della Fondazione “Allori”, which was inaugurated on March 17, 2014. It also contains a collection of images and memorabilia relating to Italian history, spanning the period from the late 19th century to the year 2000. The palazzo thus brings architectural history and historical memory together in one place.

The Necropoli di Amorosi

Near Amorosi in the Valle Telesina lies a pre-Roman necropolis with rich grave goods. The best-preserved burial area belongs to the final phases of the Iron Age and the advanced Orientalizing period. It is dated from the third quarter of the 8th century BC to the second half or the end of the 7th century BC.

The excavations covered an area of approximately 13,000 m² and uncovered a total of 88 graves. The necropolis also includes two large tumulus burials with monumental circular structures approximately 15 meters in diameter. These structures are attributed to members of the social elite of the time. The archaeological evidence therefore gives Amorosi a historical dimension reaching far back in time, clearly distinct from the later church and palace architecture.

A Green Place along the Volturno

Another side of Amorosi is revealed by the Parco del Volturno. The green park is located directly on the Volturno River in Amorosi.

Arriving via Amorosi-Melizzano

For travel purposes, Amorosi-Melizzano railway station is a point of reference in its own right. It is operated by RFI and is located 1.77 km from the center of Amorosi. Buses and shuttle services are available there for onward travel. The distance between the station and the center, together with the available onward travel options, are therefore specific points to consider when planning your stay.
