Villa Literno: Nature, Culture and Local Traditions

Villa Literno is a destination for travellers who wish to combine nature observation with religious culture, local festive traditions and agricultural products.

Soglitelle Natural Area

The Soglitelle wetland comprises artificial ponds, reed beds, glasswort prairies and brackish water. At the same time, it is home to more than 200 bird species, including avocets, black-winged stilts and collared pratincoles. In addition, there is a stable colony of around 100 flamingos.

Planning a visit to Soglitelle includes contacting the person responsible and having the opportunity to observe the birdlife accompanied by Lipu volunteers.

Anyone wishing to observe the birdlife can do so accompanied by Lipu volunteers. Contacting the person responsible is required to visit the Oasi Soglitelle.

Churches, Chapels and Places of Worship

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is part of Villa Literno’s historical and architectural heritage and dates back to the 16th century. Santa Maria del Pantano, dating from the 19th century, is a pilgrimage destination. The Madonna della Pietà chapel also dates from the 19th century.

The three religious buildings belong to two construction periods: Santa Maria Assunta dates from the 16th century, while the other two buildings date from the 19th century.

Madonna del Pantano has been a local place of worship for centuries. It contains a fresco from 1576 depicting the Madonna. For visitors interested in culture, sacred art, local memory and religious tradition come together here in a specific location.

A Carnival with Its Own History

The history of the Villa Literno Carnival officially began in 1985 with the construction of the first allegorical float. In 2017, the carnival received ministerial recognition as “Carnevale Storico d’Italia”.

Agriculture, Wine and Castle History

In Villa Literno, buffalo farming and mozzarella production are part of the area’s agricultural character. The local connection with wine includes Asprinio di Aversa, a DOC wine from the Terre del Volturno area. Its vines, traditionally trained on poplar trees, grow up to 15 metres tall.

The castle was inhabited by monks; the name “La Certosa di S.Martino” is associated with it.

Getting There and Travel Planning

By car, Villa Literno can be reached via the A1 Napoli-Roma, the Pomigliano/Villa Literno exit and then the SS7 to Villa Literno. The town also has a local railway station, allowing you to choose between travelling by car and by train when planning your trip.

The tradition of Madonna del Pantano includes an approximately seven-kilometre procession every year on the Tuesday after Easter. It leads from the church in the town through the surrounding countryside to a rural chapel. This date connects the local place of worship with a set religious route through the landscape.
