Churches and Pilgrimage Tradition
The Chiesa Santa Maria dell'Arcora is still a stop on the pilgrimage made by the Fuienti to the Santuario di Madonna dell'Arco in Sant'Anastasia. At the same time, it stands on the remains of an older small chapel. Its left-hand chapel houses a particularly valuable 18th-century depiction of the Madonna delle Grazie.
The Chiesa San Giacomo Apostolo il Maggiore was built in the first half of the 16th century at the instigation of Angiolo Como, replacing a small chapel that had been built in the second half of the 15th century. Its single-nave interior is crowned by a dome; four pendentives are decorated with painted biblical figures.
The entrance and parking area of the Chiesa San Giacomo Apostolo il Maggiore are accessible to wheelchair users. The same applies to the entrance and parking area of the Chiesa Santa Maria dell'Arcora.
Palazzi, Villas and Preserved Architectural Forms
The Palazzo Salerno-Lancellotti was the residence of the barons of the old Casale Licignano and preserves its original open courtyard layout: the buildings are arranged on three sides around a walled inner courtyard. Villa Marra, on the edge of the old town center of Casalnuovo, is associated with the designation “Masseria Marra” on Rizzi Zannoni's 1793 topographic map of the Agro Napoletano.
The Chiesa San Nicola di Bari was elevated from a simple chapel to a parish church in 1583. It contains an 18th-century marble high altar with inlay work; on its sides are the coats of arms of the noble Salerno-Doria and Salerno-de Liguoro families. The structure of Palazzo Manna has been preserved almost completely, and a small chapel dedicated to San Giuseppe is attached to it. The Chiesa Santa Maria ad Nives is a Benedictine church dating from the late 16th century.
Architectural History and Art in Casarea
In Casarea, the architectural and artistic history of the Chiesa Santa Maria delle Grazie draws attention to the 19th century: construction work on the chapel began in the early years of the 19th century at the instigation of Maddalena Chiacchieri Pisacane and was completed in 1817. The Chiesa houses two 18th-century paintings: one depicting the Madonna del Rosario, San Domenico and Santa Rosa da Lima, and another depicting the archangel San Raffaele and the young Tobia.
The Palazzo Berlingieri was a two-storey residence of the barons of Casalnuovo. The Parco delle Chiocciole provides a different focal point: it is a 1,325-square-meter landscaped green space right in the city center of Casalnuovo di Napoli.
