Giugliano in Campania combines a long, low-lying stretch of coast with Lago Patria and an unusually dense succession of historical landmarks. Coast and Lago Patria
The low, sandy coastal stretch along the Domitian coast extends for more than 3 km from Marina di Varcaturo to Lido di Licola. Lago di Patria is a non-volcanic remnant lake formed when sandy dunes were closed off from the sea behind a dune ridge. Along the shore, you can walk among reeds and meadows. This part of the destination can therefore be explored at a relaxed pace: the coast marks the open, sandy side, while the lake forms the landscape area behind it.
Liternum and Ancient Landmarks
Liternum was founded in 194 BC as a maritime colony on the left bank of Lago Patria. The amphitheatre of Liternum lies immediately south of the ancient city, in its immediate vicinity. The structure was planned in the 2nd century BC; several alterations and restorations are documented for the 1st and 2nd centuries AD.
The Tomba del Cerbero takes its conventional name from the depiction of Cerberus, the three-headed hound of the underworld, in the centre of the entrance wall of the burial chamber. At the same time, it is an extraordinary testimony to Roman funerary culture between the late Republic and the early Imperial period. It was discovered during the installation of a water pipeline in the municipality of Giugliano in Campania.
Santuario and the Flight of the Angel
The Santuario Maria Santissima Annunziata (Ave Gratia Plena) acquired its present floor plan in the form of a Latin cross, with rich Baroque decoration, in the 17th century. The Flight of the Angel is a tradition more than 250 years old.
Torre San Severino and Casacelle
Torre San Severino is associated with a Benedictine convent that was later converted into a grancia, meaning an agricultural estate. The tower may already have belonged in another form to a series of coastal watchtowers along the Phlegraean coast. These towers served to observe Saracen pirates and to give visual warning of danger or calls for help. Casacelle originated as the old farming village of Casacella and is considered the only surviving testimony to the numerous small villages that existed in the area around Giugliano until the end of the 17th century.
