Meta between Coast, Sanctuary and History
Accommodation in Meta
Meta combines a historic center with numerous monuments and attractions and a rocky coastline. This gives you a destination where cultural impressions, coastal scenery and a nature-focused excursion can be brought together in a clear travel plan. The historic center represents architecture and history, while the coast adds a maritime aspect to the character of the town.
Coast and Marinas of Meta
Marina di Meta is the only low-lying coastal section on the Sorrento Peninsula. There, Meta offers a sandy beach with a broad, equipped beach area and organized bathing establishments. Marina di Meta also has equipped beach resorts. The fishing village of Marina di Cassano can be reached from the center of Meta. This spatial layout helps you distinguish between the historic town center and the coastal areas without equating the two landscapes.
Sanctuary, Churches and Access Routes
The Basilica Santuario Santa Maria del Lauro is Meta's main church. This imposing basilica in the Neoclassical style has a Baroque bell tower. The Cappellone di San Pietro in the Basilica Santuario Santa Maria del Lauro contains maritime votive offerings dating from the 17th to the 20th century. The Madonna del Lauro is venerated in the Basilica Pontificia Santa Maria del Lauro.
On the left side of the front elevation of the Basilica Pontificia Santa Maria del Lauro, a mechanized ramp leads to the side aisle. Stairs with metal handrails lead to the right and central aisles. The Villa Comunale “Il Giardino degli Agrumi” has pedestrian entrances on Corso Italia and Via Flavio Gioia. The entrance via Via Flavio Gioia has a pedestrian ramp and a vehicle ramp; there are also spacious outdoor areas and paths for people with visual impairments.
History in the Townscape
Near the Madonna del Lauro Sanctuary, the remains of a Roman necropolis form part of the history of a pre-Roman agricultural settlement system. The historic houses of long-distance sea captains and shipowners from the old Neapolitan maritime tradition were almost all built between the second half of the 18th century and the end of the 19th century. Villa Giuseppina is a villa built in 1739 in the Vanvitelli style. The Chapel of Santissima Annunziata bears the name Santa Lucia and was built in 1656 from precisely hewn tuff stone. The single-nave Chiesa degli Angeli is dedicated to the worship of the guardian angels.
Nature Trail and Mediterranean Cuisine
One of the most striking natural phenomena is the Vallone Lavinola. Over thousands of years, water cut it into a soft layer of tuff. The nature trail in Meta is designed to take four hours. If you would like to combine nature and culture, you can plan this circular route as a separate part of your itinerary. Restaurants and pizzerias serve typical Mediterranean cuisine that combines flavors from the land and the sea.
