Goro between the Po Delta and the lagoon
Goro is a place set between the river mouth, lagoon landscapes and wetlands. The Sacca di Goro lies within the Po Delta Regional Park. Its area includes a Ramsar wetland and a Special Area of Conservation within the Natura 2000 network. Near Goro, the floodplain expands into the Valle Dindona marshland. It is home to a heron colony with night herons, little egrets, squacco herons and cattle egrets.

The recent formation of the landscape is also part of the area's character: the Scannone di Goro is also known as Isola dell’Amore. It is a landform that formed only recently as the Po Delta advanced, and it provides a refuge for numerous birds. Numerous boat trips depart from the ports of Goro and nearby Gorino, heading into the Po's natural delta landscape and downstream to the sea. The trips pass islands, sandbanks and reed beds.
Faro di Goro and Lanterna Vecchia
The Faro di Goro was built in 1950 at the mouth of the Po di Goro, on a sandspit known as “Scanno” or “Scannone”. The lighthouse has a cylindrical main structure and is approximately 22 metres high. Its lantern still has a range of 10 miles. The Faro di Goro can be reached by boat or via a nature trail that begins at Porto di Gorino.
The Lanterna Vecchia was built in 1864 near the coast as Goro's first lighthouse. The nearby two-hour boat excursion “Birdwatching al vecchio faro”, departing from Gorino, passes the Lanterna Vecchia and then continues to the lighthouse. Access to the Lanterna Vecchia nature observation area is at the owner's discretion.
Waterfront routes and birdwatching
Routes and trail sections of varying lengths are available for exploring the landscape. The approximately 25-kilometre “Birdwatching a Volano - Mesola - Goro” route along the Po di Goro continues past the Sacca di Goro to the Lanterna Vecchia. The final section of the Destra Po cycle route runs near Goro to the port of Gorino and can be continued from there to the Faro. Along the lagoon embankment, you can follow the Sacca di Goro for a distance of six kilometres.
Fishing, traditions and culture
The connection between the waterscape and fishing is visible at Goro's fish market, where the catch is auctioned every day. The Sacca di Goro is known for the production of shellfish, especially clams. The Sagra della Vongola celebrates Goro's most important product as well as the town's culinary traditions.
Cultural and educational offerings are also part of the townscape. The Teatro R. Ricci, known as the Teatrìn, is a historic building and is recognised as one of Emilia-Romagna's historic theatres. The Goro Center offers educational activities for schools, children and young people, combining learning, creativity and the discovery of the surrounding area. For all age groups, it provides interactive, practical and creative workshops on the environment, culture and biodiversity.
