Church History on the Hilltop
On the hilltop of Arola, in the first hills on the left bank of the Parma, stand the restored remains of the ancient Pieve di Arola. This place is particularly interesting if you would like to consider sacred history and a hilly landscape together.
The dating of the Pieve remains subject to cautious wording: some authors date its construction to the 6th century. In 1481, the Pieve di Arola had a single-nave layout, five altars, a bell tower, and a sacristy built of hewn stone. The present parish church of Arola was rebuilt in the mid-19th century and consecrated in 1860.

Historical Traces in the Surrounding Area
Arola is home to the 16th-century Villa Peroni. Castello di Torrechiara is located in the vicinity of Arola. Arola is also associated with the Ville Zileri–Dal Verme. This means that the nearby area presents you with various examples of architectural and local history, without needing to conflate their respective periods and functions.
Traces of the Roman centuriation are still visible along the Pilastro–Arola–Torrechiara–Badia road corridor. The historic Canale di San Michele was extended for at least another six kilometers in the direction of Arola.
