The Madonnina del Po and Baroque Buildings

The Church of Madonna della Visitazione, known as the “Madonnina del Po”, is a Baroque church dating from 1615. It is located beside the main embankment. During a flood, the church remained safe from the Po’s floodwaters despite its proximity to the river, while the surrounding houses were severely damaged. The Ciclovia Food Valley Bike also runs along the path near the Madonnina del Po. At the Madonnina del Po, culture enthusiasts can consider sacred architecture, proximity to the river and the regional cycling route together in a specific local setting.

Another Baroque building is the Oratorio di Sant’Antonio Abate, which dates from 1827. The second chapel is dedicated to those who died in the war and contains an altarpiece by Giuseppe Moroni. An organ was restored and expanded in 1790 by Giuseppe and Andrea Luigi Serassi. The large stained-glass window “Le vie del sogno” is located in Villa Corbellini. Alongside the churches, a specifically attributed altarpiece, a restored organ and a large stained-glass window are therefore among Pieveottoville’s specific cultural features.

Administrative History and Historic Spaces

From the 9th century until at least the end of the 14th century, Pieveottoville was the center of an administrative and religious district. In addition to the present-day municipal area of Zibello, this district included Ragazzola and S. Croce. The historical information explicitly refers to the present-day municipal area of Zibello and additionally names Ragazzola and S. Croce as part of the same district.

The Teatro di Pieveottoville

The Teatro di Pieveottoville was built in 1921. At its inauguration, the theater was renamed from “Teatro San Carlo” to “Teatro Angelo Frondoni, già San Carlo”. The Italian addition “già San Carlo” preserves the former name in the new one. The theater’s history can thus be traced both through its year of construction and through the documented change of name.

Festival Culture and Regional Specialty

The traditional patronal festival and the Sagra in honor of San Giovanni Battista take place on June 24. If your trip falls on this date, both events take place on the same calendar day. Regional cuisine also has a clearly defined geographical association: Spalla cotta di San Secondo is produced in an area of the Parma plain that includes Fontanellato, Roccabianca and Pieveottoville. San Secondo forms the center of this area. The culinary connection therefore explicitly extends to Pieveottoville as well, and not only to San Secondo. For trip planning, the fixed festival date is thus complemented by a geographically specific reference to the regional specialty.

Regional Connections in the Parma Plain

Pieveottoville is part of an area of the Parma plain in connection with Spalla cotta di San Secondo. Further locations associated with the Parma context are Compiano, Marore, Busseto, Terenzo, Orzale, Parma, Vigatto and Diolo.
