Rocca Estense: Defensive Architecture and State Rooms
The Rocca Estense preserves a square corner tower with Ghibelline battlements and a defensive system of machicolations. The complex includes the pointed-arch Chapel of San Giovanni, dating from the 15th century. In the state rooms, painted coffered ceilings, frescoes and stucco work preserve the furnishings from the 15th to the 18th century. The chapel and the state rooms complement the defensive form of the corner tower with sacred and representative interiors. At the Rocca, the external fortification features thus contrast with historically furnished interior architecture.
Parish Church and Museums
The parish church of San Martino in Rio has the floor plan of a Greek cross with three naves, four corner chapels and two side chapels. It was built between 1600 and 1606 in place of an older chapel. This older chapel represents the historical predecessor of the present-day church building.
The Museo dell’Agricoltura e del Mondo Rurale occupies the ground and basement floors of the Rocca Estense. Its exhibition area covers approximately 845 m² and is distributed across two levels. The objects on display include a Bronze Age plough described as the oldest in Italy. The agricultural collection is thereby spatially connected with the historic areas of the Rocca.
The Museo dell'Automobile displays around forty cars, approximately ten motorcycles and several bicycles across 650 m². In the Henghel-Gualdi Archive, you can watch videos, listen to CDs and music albums, and request scans of handwritten material. The vehicle exhibition is thus supplemented by audiovisual and handwritten materials representing additional media formats.
Events and Local Traditions
Lune in Rocca is a recurring summer cultural event series organized by Pro Loco San Martino in Rio. In 2026, it entered its 20th edition. The name of the event is directly associated with the Rocca Estense.
Pigiatura in Piasa is a traditional festival in San Martino in Rio that combines cuisine, culture and entertainment for all age groups. Historically, it included the treading of grapes, through which the production of wine was explained. Lune in Rocca and Pigiatura in Piasa thus refer to different periods: a recurring summer series and an earlier activity centered around grapes and wine.
