Apoleggia offers several distinct cultural points of interest: a parish church, a mural, a textile spear artwork and a square described as a viewpoint. Together with walking trails and a documented e-bike excursion, they provide a range of themes to consider when planning a trip to Italy. It is worth keeping the locations distinct: some artworks are directly associated with Apoleggia, while other activities extend across the municipality of Rivodutri.

Church and Art in Apoleggia

San Michele Arcangelo is the parish church of Apoleggia. Another religious theme features in the mural “Vicino ai tuoi occhi”: dedicated to Saint Francis, it is located on the boundary wall of the Apoleggia cemetery. The dedication and exact location are central to this work.

“SPEARS” takes a different approach. The textile spear artwork is inspired by local traditions and refers to the ritual of baking bread in the old oven. It was inaugurated on 16 July 2016 at the Belvedere in Apoleggia. The two artworks therefore address different themes: the mural is dedicated to a saint, while “SPEARS” relates to a local ritual. Visitors interested in art can bear these differences in mind when finding their way around the town, rather than treating both works as a single theme.

Viewpoint and Landscape in the Municipality

Piazza Belvedere in Apoleggia is described as one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the municipality of Rivodutri. Looking at the municipality as a whole also offers a broader landscape perspective: Rivodutri includes Apoleggia and Piedicolle, as well as an extensive plain that is part of the Laghi Lungo e Ripasottile Nature Reserve. The plain is therefore a landscape feature at the municipal level; the name Apoleggia alone does not refer to the entire nature reserve.

These are different scales to consider when planning a trip: Piazza Belvedere is a named viewpoint in Apoleggia, while the plain belongs to the wider municipal area. This distinction makes it possible to tell the specific place apart from the broader landscape without conflating the two.

Walking Trails and E-Bike Experiences

In the municipality of Rivodutri, Contemporary Rivodutri is a free open-air museum. Its works are spread across the hamlets of Apoleggia and Piedicolle, as well as the main town. Guided walks of around 10 kilometres are organised for Contemporary Rivodutri, linking the artworks with the surrounding landscape. Art and landscape are therefore both part of these trails.

Another activity was an e-bike excursion by the Riserva Naturale dei Laghi Lungo e Ripasottile, which included a refreshment stop in Apoleggia in 2023. The stop offered views of the Valle Reatina, and participants could sample local products there. Compared with the guided walks, this example features a different way of getting around and a specific stop along the route. The e-bike excursion dates to 2023.

Festivals and a Museum in Colle Macchia

The celebrations in honour of Madonna delle Grazie are considered Apoleggia’s most important patron-saint festival. For 2026, the Pizza Fest Apoleggia was listed as an event in its 16th edition. These two occasions offer different insights into local festival culture; the edition number of the Pizza Fest does not indicate a date for future years.

A report from 2022 located the Museo della civiltà contadina in Colle Macchia, on Strada Comunale Colli di Apoleggia, and named the Riserva Naturale dei Laghi Lungo e Ripasottile as its owner. Also in 2022, the works submitted to a painting event at the museum were brought together in an exhibition. This is a specific example of an event held at this location, adding another cultural venue in the municipality to Apoleggia’s art-related points of interest.
