Culture in the Town Centre and Historical Traces
Poggio Mirteto combines sacred art, historic buildings and lively cultural events. The town centre offers views over the Tiber Valley. As a result, both the history of the town and its cultural venues are central to a stay here.
The Museo Diocesano Sabino is located in the Palazzo Episcopale, the former residence of the commendatory abbots of Farfa. Its holdings include silver processional crosses; the oldest dates from 1306. The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, built between 1641 and 1721 to a design by Martino Longhi, houses works by Plautilla Bricci, Giovanni Baglione, Giacinto Brandi and Antonio Gherardi.

Museums and Sacred Art
The Church of San Giovanni Battista was built in 1601. Its double-sided main altarpiece depicts the birth of John the Baptist on one side and his beheading on the other. The Chiesa di San Paolo is considered the oldest church in Poggio Mirteto; its nave features frescoes from the 12th to the 14th century. The two dates distribute the religious celebrations across different seasons of the calendar year.
Palaces, Gates and Evidence of Craftsmanship
Castello Pinci in the hamlet of Castel San Pietro is the first fortified residence of the feudal lord of Castel San Pietro. Historical records of it date from 1003/1009. In Poggio Mirteto, the Porta Farnese was opened in 1576, while the Palazzo Abbaziale was built between 1285 and 1300.
In Piazza della Vetreria, the Ciminiera commemorates the Vetreria Fajella. It is the only surviving relic of this glassworks, which dates from the early 19th century and was the first glassworks of an industrial nature in Italy. The Museo Arti e Mestieri displays glassware from the historic Vetreria Faiella as well as original furnishings from the former Farmacia Laus.
Music, Festivals and Religious Dates
The Settimana Musicale Mirtense is a festival of classical, modern and contemporary music in Poggio Mirteto and reached its 20th edition in 2026. An international art competition dedicated to San Gaetano da Thiene is linked to a public call for entries held every two years, inviting artists from across Europe to depict a theme from the life, works and miracles of the saint.
Every year on 23 January and 27 June, festivals in honour of the Madonna della Misericordia take place at the Santuario Madonna della Misericordia. The Carnevale Liberato is also known as Carnevalone; the tradition has been celebrated since 1860 on the first Sunday of Lent.
