Art and Architectural History in the Town Centre

Since 1991, the Museo Maria Petrucci has been housed in Casa Raniero, a 17th-century building in the historic centre of Toffia. Across five rooms, the museum displays numerous works by the artist Maria Petrucci. The building and exhibition therefore jointly represent the town’s cultural focus.

The churches reveal a variety of links to names and works of art. The church of Madonna di Loreto is associated with the names Santa Maria in Criptula and, today, Grottuccia. Santa Maria Nova is associated with decorative and fresco work by the Sabine painter Vincenzo Manenti; the Falcone family is associated with commissioning this work.

Piazza Lauretana and Historical Traces

The San Bernardino da Siena monastery complex stands on Piazza Lauretana. The piazza formerly served as an entrance to the Castrum Tophiae. The “Marmo di Piazza” is a Roman find on Piazza Lauretana, opposite the church of Madonna di Loreto. Its surface features a depiction known as a “filetto”, as well as a chequerboard pattern with orthogonal and diagonal lines.

The former San Bernardino da Siena monastery complex is now a cultural space where the Associazione O33 stages theatrical activities. The site thus combines its former monastic character with a present-day cultural use.

The area’s history reaches back even further: archaeological finds show that the area around Toffia was already inhabited during the Apennine period between 1000 and 2000 BC, as well as in Roman times. The historic centre of Toffia is surrounded by walls that are now in ruins.

Palazzo, Seasons and Cultural Life

Palazzo Orsini is located in the lower part of Toffia and is associated with the Orsini family. In summer, Toffia is associated with blossoming cherry trees, and in winter with the scent of ground olive oil. Depending on when you travel, a different local impression comes to the fore.

The Cammino di San Francesco passes through Toffia. The “Riviviamo il centro storico” festival was founded in 1996 and takes place annually in Toffia.
