Medieval Center and Renaissance Architecture

Bomarzo combines a well-preserved medieval historic center with an unusually multifaceted local history. At its center is the Palazzo Orsini, a Renaissance building in Bomarzo’s historic center. The church of Santa Maria Assunta preserves the remains of Saint Anselm.

Archaeological Traces Around Bomarzo

The Montecasoli Necropolis is part of Bomarzo’s historical and archaeological circular trail. The Etruscan-Roman settlement of Pianmiano is also included in this trail. The early Christian cemetery of S. Cecilia is another component of the same historical and archaeological circular trail. Along the trail, the necropolis, settlement and cemetery represent different historical forms of settlement.

The Monte Casoli nature reserve also preserves traces from different periods. Its remains include Etruscan, Roman and medieval settlements.

Rocky Landscape, Nature Reserve and Wine Route

Bomarzo is situated on a rocky outcrop formed by lava flows from the volcanic complex of the Monti Cimini. This geological foundation shapes the character of the area and provides the setting for the connection between local history, nature and regional culture.

The Monte Casoli nature reserve encompasses wooded areas, former pastureland, agriculturally used land and valleys of varying depth. Bomarzo is also located along the Teverina Wine Route.

The Parco dei Mostri and Unusual Rock Formations

The Parco dei Mostri features optical illusions, giant monsters and mythological animals. At the same time, it is a stone park created in the 16th century, whose design is connected with the Peperino typical of Bomarzo. In the Parco dei Mostri, the world of motifs consisting of optical illusions, monsters and mythological animals is combined with the Peperino typical of Bomarzo. The park thus adds a distinctive element to the town’s cultural experiences.

Another notable stone monument is the Etruscan Pyramid. It is a stone approximately 16 meters high, with steps carved into it leading to an altar.

Experience Bomarzo on Special Festive Days

On April 24 and 25, Bomarzo hosts the Palio di Sant’Anselmo between the town’s five Contrade, or districts. The competition is therefore closely connected with Bomarzo’s internal structure and brings the local districts together in a shared festive setting. Both festivals take place on the same two days in April, while the Palio is additionally organized around the five Contrade, or districts.

The Sagra del Biscotto is also celebrated in Bomarzo on April 24 and 25.

Getting There and Trip Planning

From the north, Bomarzo can be reached via the Attigliano exit on the A1, heading toward Viterbo. From the south, the Orte–Viterbo expressway, Bomarzo exit, leads to the town. The railway stations associated with Bomarzo include Orte and Attigliano. The direction of arrival is relevant when traveling by road; Orte and Attigliano additionally provide connections to two railway stations.
