Fabrica: Castles, Frescoes and Paths Through Lazio

Fabrica di Roma combines Roman and medieval history with paths through the landscape of Lazio. Falerii Novi is a Roman city in the present-day municipal area of Fabrica di Roma, approximately halfway between Fabrica di Roma and Civita Castellana. In the town itself, churches, castles and frescoes represent different historical settings.

Roman History and Sacred Architecture

The Cistercian Abbey Church of Santa Maria di Falleri was built at the end of the 12th century on the initiative of monks from Savoy. Dating from this period, it is one of the religious buildings that complement the historical focus around Fabrica.

Castles and Frescoes in the Historic Centre

The Collegiata di San Silvestro Papa contains Renaissance frescoes by the Torresani brothers. They adorn the entire apse and are based on the school of Raphael. The church thus provides a specific example of the connection between Renaissance painting and local sacred architecture.

Together with the Collegiata di San Silvestro Papa, the Castello Farnese with its tall tower defines the typically medieval historic centre of Fabrica di Roma. The Castello di Fabrica is a powerful palace-fortress with corner towers. It dates back to the year 1000; its present structure was shaped by the Prefects of Vico in the 12th century and expanded by the Farnese family in the 16th century.

Another church in the town is Santa Maria della Pietà in Fabrica di Roma. It dates from the 15th century, has an octagonal floor plan with a nave extending in front of it, and preserves frescoes from the 16th century. Its architectural form and preserved furnishings add a distinctive accent alongside the Collegiata and the castles.

Via Amerina and Paths Through the Forests

The Via Amerina passes through the municipality of Fabrica di Roma in Lazio. The town's connection with the landscape also includes the Fabrica di Roma nature trail. It was equipped with colour-coded signs for different routes for cycling, walking and horse riding, and leads through the forests of Bandita and Quartaccio.

The nature trail was also equipped with two fitness areas. These included benches, bars, parallel bars and balance beams. The various elements mark the route not only as a connection through the forests, but also as a path with specially designed areas for physical activities.

Events Connected with the Town

The Corsa della Macchina di San Matteo takes place every year. Members of the brotherhood carry the canopy bearing the image of the saint uphill from the Corso della Circonvallazione to Piazza Duomo. The Sagra del Fagiolo Carne also takes place in September.
