Sipicciano: Village, Fresco Art and Views of the Tiber

The Tuff Cliff, the Plateau and the Tiber Valley

The old village of Sipicciano stretches across the top of a tuff cliff. Sipicciano lies on a plateau 158 metres above sea level, overlooking the valley of the River Tiber.

Palazzo Baronale: Aula Magna and Baglioni Frieze

The historic village of Sipicciano includes the 15th-century Palazzo Baronale. Its Aula Magna features a restored frieze depicting four members of the Baglioni family. The same frieze contains perspectival depictions of landscapes and castles. The Aula Magna is therefore the room where figures from the family, along with landscape and castle motifs, come together.

Cappella Baglioni in the Former Church Complex

The monumental complex of the former church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo includes the Cappella Baglioni. Its interior surfaces, completely covered with frescoes, depict the miracles of Saint Francis of Assisi. The fresco cycle in this chapel, dedicated to the saint, is attributed to Marzio Ganassini. The decoration was completed in 1601 with the installation of an altarpiece by Durante Alberti da Borgo San Sepolcro.

San Bernardino, Villa Lais and Madonna delle Vigne

Outside the historic centre, the church of San Bernardino, dedicated to the patron saint, preserves valuable 14th-century frescoes. The building was formerly a Franciscan monastery. Villa Lais, an 18th-century residence associated with the Fabbrucci, Appolloni and Lais families, also forms part of the historic townscape. The dates of the artistic and architectural works range from the 14th century at San Bernardino, through the 15th-century Palazzo Baronale, to the 18th-century Villa Lais.

The rural church of Madonna delle Vigne was built at the request of the ox drivers out of gratitude for the grape harvest. The reason for its construction places the grape harvest alongside the building's religious function.

Poggio del Castagno and Poggio la Guardia

The hamlet of Poggio del Castagno has a green park with facilities. Village festivals and popular celebrations take place there in summer. The park and summer festivals thus belong to the same hamlet. In the hamlet of Poggio la Guardia, in the Tiber plain, the remains of a rural settlement from Roman times were uncovered during a recent archaeological excavation. The settlement's Roman period therefore predates the 15th-century Palazzo Baronale.

Access via the A1 and the Orte–Viterbo Railway Line

Those arriving by car can reach Sipicciano via the A1 motorway and the Attigliano exit. By train, the Orte–Viterbo line runs through Sipicciano station. The route to the destination is therefore specifically identified by both the motorway connection at Attigliano and the station in the town.
