Pornassio combines a varied landscape with churches, castles, historic trails and its own wine culture. Those who want to understand not just one place but also its surroundings during a trip to Italy will find a range of points of interest here: from an easy walking trail to a challenging route, and from Romanesque architecture to Napoleonic forts.

Landscape between the Mediterranean and Alpine regions

Pornassio is considered a meeting point of two landscapes existing side by side: the southern part of the area is Mediterranean, while an Alpine region begins to the north, on the border with Piedmont. This connection shapes the perception of the place and makes the landscape varied, without requiring different destinations to be combined.

Agricultural land and forests together define the scenery. Olive groves and vineyards shape the landscape of the rural area; lavender, broom, valerian and autumnal grapevines add seasonal colours. The forests and mountains are home to a diverse range of wildlife, including wild boar, hares, foxes and badgers.

Churches, settlements and stone heritage

The Church of San Dalmazzo has a Romanesque bell tower dating from the 12th century. It is made of dressed stone blocks and features two rows of bifora windows, meaning divided window openings. The church also has a stone entrance portal dating from 1445, with a fresco lunette depicting the Madonna and Child, attributed to Giovanni Canavesio.

The Castle of Pornassio stands on a hill overlooking the entire town. Ponti also draws attention to the area's older buildings: the settlement is considered the oldest and architecturally most interesting in the Pornassio area and has a stone portal in Vico Arroscia dating from 1169.

In Ottano stands the Colombaia, built in 1612 and probably formerly used as a watchtower. The Santuario “N.S. del Santissimo Nome” in San Luigi was built by 1775. In Audeburghi, the Pietra delle Croci is an almost regular five-sided boulder engraved with touching pagan crosses.

The Napoleonic forts include Montescio, Bellarasco, Pozzanghi, Richermo and Centrale. They were built around 1870 under the direction of General De Sonnaz, using dressed stone blocks joined with mortar. This adds a military-historical dimension to the sacred and rural heritage around Pornassio.

Trails with different profiles

Percorso B begins at the car park at Colle di Nava. This challenging route, offering panoramic views, reaches a maximum elevation of 1,221 metres at Monte Ariolo. It is therefore suited to visitors who want to include a greater challenge and a higher-elevation section in their plans.

Percorso G is a moderately difficult historical and monumental route that begins in Case Rosse. Percorso I, by contrast, is an easy walking trail offering panoramic views and begins at Piazzetta Ponti di Pornassio. The different difficulty levels and starting points help you organise the trails according to your preferred intensity and available time.

Wine made from Ormeasco grapes

Ormeasco is considered Pornassio's most important typical wine product and is a ruby-red wine. This local speciality is complemented by Ormesco Sciac-trà, a naturally rosé-coloured wine made using white-wine production methods from Ormeasco grapes. Both names are therefore among the culinary specialities that add to the character of the place beyond its landscape and architecture.
