Trucco: Between Valle Roia, Chapels and Murinai
Trucco in Valle Roia
Trucco is one of the settlements along Valle Roia. In the Trucco district and in Murinai, there are religious buildings, a local baking tradition and the features of Piazzetta Murinai; in the surrounding area are Albintimilium, Forte dell’Annunziata and Spiaggia Ventimiglia.
Hike and route to Trucco
On the Airole–Ventimiglia hike, Strada Provinciale 92 is crossed later on. It leads downhill to the right towards the hamlets of Verrandi and Trucco in the Roya Valley. For planning the route on this tour, the sequence is relevant: the provincial road is crossed only later. The route therefore does not reach this section of road at the starting point, but only further along. Those planning the hike independently can mark the section of road as a later landmark. The direction to Verrandi and Trucco is given within the course of the route and does not indicate the starting point of the tour. Both Airole and Ventimiglia, as well as the later road crossing, are therefore relevant for the classification. The two hamlets belong to the later section of the tour in the Roya Valley.
Churches and chapels with different dates
The parish church of Santi Pietro e Paolo in the Trucco district was established in 1962. This must be distinguished from the Chapel of Santi Pietro e Paolo in Trucco, which was built in 1675 with the bishop’s approval. There is also the Chapel of Sant’Antonio Abate, built in 1648. Another chapel called “della Neve” is located near the houses of Murinai in Trucco. The parish dates from the 20th century, while the chapels of Santi Pietro e Paolo and Sant’Antonio Abate were built in the 17th century.
Murinai and the history of baking
The Murinai district once had its own oven, where the residents’ ancestors baked bread and other foods. This former oven is part of the district’s local history and reflects a community-oriented form of provisioning. The historic oven must be distinguished from the features of the piazzetta.
Piazzetta Murinai has a communal oven, a fountain, benches and hand-worked stone paving. It is precisely this combination of a communal facility, water source, seating and worked stone that gives the square its distinctive character. In addition to its chapels, Murinai therefore also has a specific architectural and communal feature.
Since 1965, the Panificio Valle Roja bakery in Trucco has represented the local baking tradition. The baking tradition is therefore connected both with the former oven in Murinai and with the bakery in Trucco.
