Corniglia: Vineyard Terraces, Trails and History

Corniglia is one of the five villages that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Portovenere, Cinque Terre, and the Islands (Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto). At the same time, its location distinguishes it within the Cinque Terre: Corniglia is the only one of the five villages that is not directly by the water. Those wishing to combine culture, vineyard terraces and hiking will find a destination here with clear landscape and historical connections.

Terraced Landscapes and Trails through Nature

The settlement of Corniglia is surrounded on three sides by vineyards and terraces. This landscape continues along Trail 587 between Corniglia and Cigoletta: the trail passes through terraced vineyards, past olive trees and onward through forests of maritime pines and holm oaks. From Corniglia, Trail 587 also climbs through holm-oak and chestnut forests.

The SVA Corniglia–Vernazza trail also connects the surrounding area with a characteristic terraced landscape. It passes through terraced terrain planted with olive trees and reaches a viewpoint overlooking Corniglia and Guvano Beach. This places different landscapes alongside one another over short distances: cultivated terraces, olive groves and wooded sections.

Hikes with Different Levels of Difficulty

Several described trails lead to Corniglia or begin there. The Itinerario dei vigneti terrazzati runs from Riomaggiore to Corniglia over 8.291 kilometres; the stated walking time for the outward journey is 3 hours and 15 minutes. La Via dei Ciàn leads from Manarola to Corniglia, is 5.488 kilometres long, takes 2 hours and 30 minutes, and has an elevation difference of 380 metres.

The Itinerario dei vigneti terrazzati passes through Porciana and Pianca before descending a staircase through cultivated vineyard terraces to Corniglia. It reaches the square in front of the parish church of San Pietro e Paolo and then continues through the streets of Corniglia to the Belvedere. Trail 587 begins in the village near the Lardarina staircase. From the sanctuary, you can reconnect with the Sentiero Azzurro via Trail 7/b above Corniglia.

An orange-marked trail offers a different planning perspective: it begins in Corniglia, takes 2 hours and 15 minutes, and can be reached by bus from Corniglia railway station. In addition, Kayak Route 3 connects Corniglia and Manarola; the stated travel time is 22 to 44 minutes. The different distances, elevation differences and modes of transport give you several ways to organise your days according to your interests and available time.

Arrival and Orientation on Site

A road suitable for vehicles leads uphill to Corniglia from the railway station. Another notable connection is the Lardarina: the staircase with 377 steps connects Corniglia with the beach and the railway station. When choosing your hotel or accommodation, these two reference points can be just as important as proximity to one of the described trails. Which connection matters to you depends on your own daily planning.

Churches, the Belvedere and Historical Traces

The Church of San Pietro was built in the 14th century on an existing chapel and remodelled in the Baroque style in the 18th century. The Oratorio dei Disciplinati di Santa Caterina also dates from the 18th century. At the end of Via Fieschi, the Belvedere offers a view of Corniglia on its rocky promontory.

The history of wine also reaches far back. Among the finds from the excavations at Pompeii was wine from Corniglia, which was stored in amphorae bearing the inscription Cornelia. Thus, in Corniglia, the visible vineyard terraces, historic religious buildings and a preserved wine tradition come together.
