Roman Heritage Around Luni

The museum and archaeological area of Luni convey the 1,400-year history of the Roman colony of Luna. The Museo di Luni combines an exhibition facility with the excavations of the ancient Roman colony, which was dedicated to the goddess Luna. The archaeological area features explanatory information panels and a free audio guide that you can listen to on your own mobile phone.

Getting Oriented and Travelling to the Site

The archaeological area of Luni is accessible via step-free paths marked on the visitor map. The car park for the Museo di Luni is located on Via Falaschi. The museum and archaeological area of Luni can be reached directly from the A12 motorway via two designated rest areas marked Antica Luni. From the designated rest area on the A12 motorway, the archaeological area can be reached after parking via a 1.2-kilometre walking route. In addition, the Passerella Portus Lunae connects the A12 motorway directly with the archaeological site of Luni. If you are planning this visit, it is therefore worth considering the access route, car park and subsequent walk separately.

Sports and Activities for Different Age Groups

Luni Mare Sporting Club has a swimming pool, tennis courts, beach tennis, beach volleyball, a five-a-side football pitch and a multi-purpose hall for activities such as roller skating and hockey. Activities are offered there for all age groups, from beginner to competitive level; the club is also accessible to visitors with disabilities. The Play District in Luni Mare includes basketball, an artistic roller-skating course, beach tennis, a swimming course and boxing, among other activities. The Play District programme also includes workshops, street art, music and educational activities focused on food sustainability.

Trails Through Landscapes and History

The 12-kilometre Ciclopedonale sul Canale Lunense runs through the Magra Valley and along the Canale Lunense through Santo Stefano Magra, Sarzana, Castelnuovo Magra and Luni. In the area around Luni, you can explore the Via Francigena on foot or by bicycle. On 25 July 2026, an events programme included a guided walk along the Via Francigena from Luni Mare Sporting Club to the archaeological excavations.

Fields, Walking Trails and Gastronomy

The Tenuta di Marinella stretches from Marinella to the built-up area of Luni Mare and several fields beyond. In the immediate vicinity of Luni Mare, it is used for walking, running and cycling. For a break, Lunatica Bar/Ristoro offers breakfast, lunch, snacks, aperitifs, dinner and after-dinner service. Da Martina offers seafood dishes, meat dishes, wood-fired pizza, vegetarian and vegan options, as well as children's menus.
