Historic Sarzana Between Walls and Alleyways

Sarzana is best experienced through its historic centre: it lies within 15th-century town walls and is characterised by narrow, atmospheric alleyways. The walls and alleyways give the centre a clearly recognisable historic character and lead to several important buildings, museums and cultural spaces.

Renaissance Fortresses

One important landmark is the Fortezza Firmafede. It was built on the orders of Lorenzo il Magnifico between 1487 and 1492 and is considered an important example of late-15th-century Florentine military architecture. Its history connects Sarzana with the architecture and political culture of the Renaissance. The fortress therefore represents not only defence, but also the Florentine style of this period.

The MUdeF Fortress Museum is housed in the Fortezza Firmafede. It is divided into 27 rooms. This allows you to view the fortress as a building while also incorporating a museum visit into the same cultural experience, without having to travel between different locations within Sarzana.

The Fortezza di Sarzanello and the Via Francigena

A second prominent site is the Fortezza di Sarzanello, an important example of Renaissance military architecture. From Sarzana’s historic centre, it can be reached via a short mule track of approximately 1.5 kilometres. The mule track to the Fortezza di Sarzanello follows a section of the Via Francigena.

The Fortezza di Sarzanello is open for visits year-round. This makes it one of Sarzana’s historic attractions that can be included in your plans regardless of the time of year you travel. Together with the Fortezza Firmafede, it creates a cultural itinerary centred on two distinct examples of fortress architecture.

Theatres, Churches and Museums

The Teatro degli Impavidi is a typical Italian opera-box theatre with a stalls area, three tiers of boxes and a gallery. Its layout showcases a traditional form of theatre that differs clearly from a modern auditorium.

The Oratorio della Misericordia is now known as the Museo Diocesano. The Museo Diocesano is divided into six exhibition rooms and displays, among other things, a reliquary containing a vial of the Precious Blood of Jesus from the 8th century. Sarzana’s Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is also home to the oldest painted Italian cross, a work by Maestro Guglielmo dating from 1138. These places add religious art, sacred history and architecture to your city walk as distinct yet interconnected focal points.

Marinella di Sarzana and Practical Information

The municipality of Sarzana includes Marinella di Sarzana, with an approximately 1.5-kilometre-long sandy beach. There are both serviced and free beach areas, as well as shallow seabeds.

For your arrival, Sarzana railway station provides a simple point of orientation. A taxi service is available opposite the station. From the station, you can reach the centre via the tree-lined avenue visible at the exit.
