Carbuta between San Martino, waterfalls and hiking trails

Carbuta combines historical connections with trails through the forest, along a watercourse and to waterfalls. The Church of San Martino and the history of Carbuta

The Chiesa di San Martino in the Carbuta hamlet is designated as a protected immovable cultural asset. The church in Carbuta was rebuilt, dedicated to San Martino and blessed on May 21, 1707. As early as 1912, an image of the Santo Bambino di Praga was placed on a side altar in the Church of San Martino. Several specific historical connections therefore come together closely in this location.

The parish of Carbuta was founded on August 3, 1465, after being separated from the parish of San Nicolò in Calice. The statue of the Santo Bambino di Praga arrived in Carbuta on November 6, 1919. It was placed on the designated altar on January 31, 1920; the following day, February 1, 1920, the statue was carried in a procession through Carbuta.

In 1922, August 25 was established as the feast day of the Santo Bambino di Praga in Carbuta. On October 18, 1922, the founding of a brotherhood dedicated to the Santo Bambino di Praga was also approved. These dates provide the local history with a clearly traceable chronological sequence, without requiring you to limit yourself to individual buildings.

Waterfalls and trails for different tours

The Anello di Canto e Cascate rio Carbuta runs through the municipality of Calice Ligure and is 2,311 meters long. The trail to the Cascate del Carbuta follows the Torrente Carbuta first to a pair of small waterfalls, then to a larger one and finally to another smaller waterfall.

The Carbuta–Rifugio Siri route begins above the chapel of Carbuta and, behind the parish church of San Martino, initially follows the course of the water pipeline on a broad path before continuing through the shady forest. It also passes the Cappella della Madonna delle Grazie (“Due di luglio”) and a viewpoint.

Longer hikes and mountain-bike trails

Another route runs from Carbuta via the Rifugio Siri and the Colle di Cravarezza to the “Base Nato”. It is 7.8 kilometers long, has an ascent of 740 meters and is classified as moderately difficult to difficult; one section is intended for experienced hikers.

In the Pian dei Corsi and San Rocco di Carbuta areas, mountain-bike trails have been incorporated into Calice Ligure’s outdoor trail network. When choosing a hotel, you can therefore consider Carbuta according to your own priorities: the historical sites surrounding San Martino and the Santo Bambino di Praga, the trails along the Torrente Carbuta, or a route with a specified length and difficulty.

Ferragosto in Carbuta

Ferragosto in Carbuta is also one of the town’s historically documented references. The event reached its 54th edition in 2026; the first edition took place in 1970. Together with the church-history dates, this creates a picture in which historical years, religious traditions, trails and landscape features stand side by side.
