Under the name “Villa di Ranzi”, the settlement developed into a medieval rural village. An early landmark is the Cappella di San Sebastiano on the dei Gazzi hill. It was established by Benedictine monks, who built the chapel around the year 1000. The history of Ranzi thus reaches far back and can be traced through specific religious buildings.

The Chiesa di San Bernardo Abate also tells the story of the village’s development. It was separated from San Michele di Giustenice in 1607 and elevated to a parish church in 1615. In addition, the patron saint’s festival, Festa Patronale di San Bernardo Abate, is celebrated in Ranzi every year on 20 August. The date connects the church’s religious tradition with a recurring event in village life.

Historic Trails around Ranzi

For hiking enthusiasts, the Sentiero del Fieno is a notable landmark. The trail begins in Ranzi’s square and runs through rocky, steep terrain. It originally continued as far as Monte Carmo.

Another historic connection is provided by the Pietra Ligure–Ranzi–Pian delle Bosse trail. It was restored as a connecting route to the “Terre alte”. Together with the Sentiero del Fieno, it links the village’s history with the traditional connections between Ranzi and the higher-lying landscapes.

Preserved Gumbi and Local Working History

Four different types of “gumbi” preserved in Ranzi offer a special insight into the area’s local cultural history. They illustrate the historical development of olive-milling methods, from human power through animal power to mechanical drive.
