Palazzago between Hiking Trails and Church Art

Palazzago combines clearly marked hiking trails, historic churches and local cuisine with its own specialities. Paths through valleys and districts, views over the landscape, sacred art and culinary impressions are among the specific highlights of Palazzago.

Hiking Trails with Different Profiles

The Sentiero 861 connects the Parco Oasi in Barzana with the summit of Monte Linzone and passes through several districts of Palazzago. The trail is classified with difficulty level E for hiking trails. The Sentiero 861 and the smaller hiking trails of Palazzago are marked with signs indicating route names, locations and walking times.

The Sentiero 862 starts at the car park opposite the Palazzago festival grounds on Via Annunciata. A descending staircase leads to the B.V. Maria delle Salette church in Beita. Beita Municipal Park has picnic facilities and toilets.

The Percorso dei Pradéi is a circular trail just under 8 km long with 370 metres of elevation gain. It runs through the Pradéi Valley and the Valle Bruciata south of Palazzago town centre.

Landscape and Spatial Orientation

The SS 342 is also known as “Briantea”; it crosses the southern part of Palazzago and connects Bergamo with Lecco. The circular route near Brocchione offers views of the district on one side of the hill and the beginning of the Bergamo plain on the other. A monumental tree is over 20 metres tall, has a circumference of 340 cm and an estimated age of 150 years.

Churches, Art and Local History

The Church of San Giovanni Battista in Palazzago preserves the altarpiece of the Assumption by Giovan Battista Moroni. Its bell tower dates from the 14th century and was converted from a defensive tower.

The parish church of Gromlongo, a district of Palazzago, dates from the 17th century and has a richly carved sandstone façade. In Burligo, the parish church of San Carlo Borromeo preserves works by Gian Paolo Cavagna as well as a Bossi organ from 1797.

The Church of Santa Margherita in Palazzago was founded in 1489 and demolished and rebuilt in 1730. It has an octagonal floor plan and a vault decorated with trompe-l’œil paintings. On 3 August 1728, the foundation stone was laid in Palazzago for a new church dedicated to the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist; it was blessed and opened for worship in 1755.

Local Cuisine and Agricultural Products

Agricultural products associated with Palazzago include grapes, wine, honey and chestnuts. La Nostra Cucina serves handmade Scarpinocc with melted butter and sage, as well as natural wines produced in-house by the farm. La Nostra Cucina is open at weekends; reservations are accepted for private events, ceremonies and small groups.
