Romano Di Lombardia between the Borgo, Museums and Cycling Tours
Romano Di Lombardia combines a historic Borgo with fortified structures, museums, the Parco del Serio and two differently designed cycling projects. If you would like to combine culture and activity on your trip to Italy, you will find a place here whose sights range from medieval architecture to sacred art and regional heritage.
Historic Borgo and Fortified Architecture
In the historic Borgo di Romano, adjoining buildings, narrow streets and large courtyards shape the townscape. Another perspective is offered by the former double defensive moat of the Borgo storico di Romano, which is now largely occupied by a tree-lined pedestrian avenue. The path provides views of the medieval town center.
Among the notable buildings is the Castello Visconteo, an almost square fortified complex with four tall corner towers and battlemented walls. The Palazzo della Ragione was built in the 12th to 13th century and historically served as a community palace. The Chiesa di S. Maria Assunta e S. Giacomo Maggiore has a large façade with two bell towers. During the morning visits to the Rocca Viscontea, you can visit the Museo memoria della comunità inside free of charge. There you will find an extensive collection of weapons and memorabilia from the world wars and the 20th century.
Museums between Sacred Art and Local History
The Museo d'Arte e Cultura Sacra presents its collections chronologically: from the origins of Romano di Lombardia through Renaissance, Baroque and 19th-century art to contemporary sacred art. The museum also includes a library with more than 30,000 volumes. The Museo Giovan Battista Rubini is located in the heart of Romano di Lombardia and occupies five rooms on the ground floor. The Palazzo Rubini is a palace in Romano di Lombardia dating from 1845.
Nature and Cycling Projects along the Serio
The Parco del Serio in Romano di Lombardia has an acclimatization center for white storks as well as an outdoor nest for wild storks. The park complements the historical sights with a natural and wildlife dimension.
For your individual travel planning, the two cycling projects differ considerably. The Tour cicloturistico Romano, Martinengo e Mornico is a 22-kilometer cycling tour that begins in Romano di Lombardia, passes through the three participating towns and the Parco del fiume Serio, and includes visits to important historic buildings. For the Itinerario cicloturistico dei Castelli della Bassa Bergamasca, a 51-kilometer cycling route has been completed as a feasibility study. This project is the first building block of a network of 14 cycling routes designed to use environmentally friendly mobility to discover an extensive natural, landscape, historical, artistic and architectural heritage. The different lengths help you distinguish an individual cycling tour from a larger route project.
