Valleve Between Local History and Mountain Trails

Valleve combines a historic town center with trails leading into the mountain landscape and to high-altitude passes. This creates a destination with two clear focal points: the center showcases architecture and local history, while the Sentieri provide different routes to meadows, forests, grazing areas, and alpine crossings. Valleve is therefore particularly appealing if you would like to combine cultural impressions and outdoor activity during your stay.

Historic Town Center and Sacred Heritage

The historic center of Valleve preserves an urban structure dating from the Middle Ages and the 17th century. The central square is framed by arcades, decorated houses, and a small church. The combination of square, houses, and arcades provides a vivid insight into Valleve’s development over several centuries.

An important landmark in the town’s history is the parish church of Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo Apostoli. On June 30, 1432, Bishop Aregazzi consecrated the rebuilt church to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul. After an avalanche destroyed part of its façade during the night of March 28, 1888, the parish church was rebuilt from its foundations.

Different historical layers also emerge in Cambrembo and at the Casa dei Notai. The Oratorio di Santa Elisabetta in Cambrembo shows traces dating from the 13th century, while its present form dates from the 17th century. The Casa dei Notai preserves three centuries of local history.

La Rasega: Technology and Craftsmanship

La Rasega preserves further tangible evidence of Valleve’s local past. A historic turbine supplied the entire settlement with electricity until the 1970s. The historic sawmill at La Rasega is still fully operational. Both examples show how closely the town’s development was connected with skilled craftsmanship and local technology, without requiring a large museum setting.

Trails through Meadows, Forests, and Alpine Pastures

Sentiero 112 begins at Cambrembo in Valleve and passes through meadows, forests, and grazing areas, passing several alpine huts along the way. Its route brings the area’s different landscape elements directly into focus: open spaces alternate with wooded sections and areas shaped by summer grazing.

Sentiero 117 can also be reached from the Valrobà district of Valleve. From the Casera di Monte Colle, the trail opens up wide views of the peaks of the upper Val Fondra. Sentiero 117 leads to the Forcolino di Torcola at an elevation of 1,856 meters. With appropriate safety precautions, it is also suitable for snowshoeing.

Sentiero 112 joins the Sentiero delle Orobie Centro-Occidentali and provides access in the direction of Passo di Tartano at an elevation of 2,102 meters. The two trails therefore differ in their described orientation: Sentiero 112 connects meadows, forests, grazing areas, and alpine huts with a wider trail network, while Sentiero 117 leads to a high-altitude crossing and offers views of the peaks of the upper Val Fondra.

Summer Pastures and Winter Activities

Valleve’s landscape is also connected with the residents’ former livelihood. In earlier times, the inhabitants of Valleve devoted themselves entirely to livestock farming and summer alpine grazing. In summer, a herd is taken to the pastures of Alpe Arale–San Simone in the municipality of Valleve. The San Simone ski area in Valleve includes the Camoscio chairlift. Together with the possibility of using Sentiero 117 for snowshoeing with appropriate safety precautions, this creates different seasonal options for planning your trip.

When choosing a hotel or other accommodation in Valleve, having a clear idea of your trip helps put the destination into perspective. The historic town center, Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo Apostoli, Cambrembo, and La Rasega are suited to a stay focused on architecture, history, and local technology.
