Cagno is a destination for travelers who want to combine outdoor activities with tangible local history. Highlights include an extensive network of trails, the landscape of former Molera quarries, and several churches, as well as the Mulino del Trotto in Cagno. For planning purposes, the key question is therefore whether you want to focus your stay more on hiking and cycling or on cultural and historical discoveries.

Trails and the Molera Landscape

The tourist Sentiero di Fondovalle 701/801 (701–801) is 10.7 kilometers long and mostly flat. The stated walking time is 3.5 hours; the route can be walked or cycled in both directions. It provides access to most of the former Molera quarries in the natural monument located between Malnate and Solbiate con Cagno.

The 165-hectare Sistema Naturalistico delle Cave di Molera di Malnate e Cagno protects the outcrops and the ecosystem surrounding the former quarries. For centuries, gray sandstone with bluish-yellow streaks, known as “molera,” was quarried and worked there.

A second trail option is provided by Parco Valle del Lanza: it has more than 70 kilometers of marked and signposted trails that can be used on foot or by bicycle.

Churches and Historical Testimonies

The town’s history includes three different religious buildings. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Paolo II in Cagno was completed in 1979 and was the first church in the Diocese of Como dedicated to the pope. Between the 16th and 17th centuries, the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo became the parish church of Cagno. The Chiesetta di San Giorgio in Cagno preserves a Romanesque bell tower from the 11th century.

The Mulino del Trotto was operated with three wheels and was used to grind grain. Its buildings, with stone walls, wooden arcades, and irregular floor plans, are well preserved. A cascina belonging to the complex now serves as the park’s information center and exhibition space.

Places to Visit Around Cagno

The area around Cagno includes the Villa Augusta palace complex, the Civico Museo D'arte Moderna E Contemporanea, the Museo Tattile Varese, Il Castello di Gornate Olona, and the Giardini di Palazzo Estense. The summit of Monte Bisbino is also in the vicinity of Cagno; the Monte Generoso mountain is in the wider regional area around Cagno.

When choosing a hotel, you can consider the trails as well as natural and cultural attractions as thematic criteria for planning your days. You can weigh whether your days should be shaped by the flat Sentiero, the longer trails in the Parco, or the churches and historic complexes. This decision remains a matter of your personal travel pace.
