Zelo Buon Persico between Nature, Water and History

Nature at Parco Ittico Paradiso

Parco Ittico Paradiso is a 13-hectare nature oasis in a woodland containing around 9,000 plants. This places not only the landscape but also direct awareness of the underwater world at the heart of the experience.

Water Landscapes and Former River Courses

Mortone is a former riverbed of the Adda, largely covered by reeds. Riserva Naturale Mortone is a wetland area of around 30 hectares with small bodies of water, a clear watercourse and dense vegetation. Those who pay attention to landforms, tranquil waters and the effect of dense plant growth will find a distinctly different natural character here from that of the woodland at Parco Ittico Paradiso.

The ancient Aqua Mutiana is also part of the area’s historic landscape. According to tradition, it still exists in the area of Zelo Buon Persico and corresponds to today’s Muzzetta Canal. This tradition connects the present-day water landscape with an ancient trace, without implying any further statement about its current function.

Historic Sites and Nature Education

After further restoration, the Oratorio S. Michele was converted into a Centro Parco. The Centro Parco houses an educational trail that introduces visitors to the natural and historical features of the surrounding area. At the Centro Parco di Villa Pompeiana, there is also a children’s playground outdoors and rooms for educational activities. These offerings place different emphasis on exploring the landscape, sharing knowledge and spending time with children.

The Church of Sant'Andrea in Zelo Buon Persico was recorded as a parish in 1584. In Villa Pompeiana, the ruins of the ancient Church of Santa Maria di Montebello or Pizighetono can still be seen. Both references draw attention to the area’s historical development, with the ruins in Villa Pompeiana representing a directly visible remnant of the past.

Evidence of Local Daily Life

The ice house on Via Lombardia is a cultural asset protected by the Soprintendenza and at the same time the last evidence of an agricultural past that is fading from the town. It therefore represents a specific aspect of local history that extends beyond sacred buildings and ancient ruins.

A new food outlet at Parco Ittico Paradiso is also part of the experience today. It offers food produced locally through a short supply chain, or km 0, made by the Bio Luga farm and local businesses.
