Marcaria between Wetlands and History

Marcaria is a destination for travelers who want to combine nature and culture. The Torbiere di Marcaria nature reserve represents a distinctive landscape along the Oglio River, while churches, historic building complexes, and the Ponte di barche di Torre d’Oglio offer insights into different eras and regional features. When planning your trip, Marcaria can therefore be explored according to your interests: as a place for nature observation, cultural history, and an excursion along the Percorso Parco Oglio Sud.

Torbiere di Marcaria and the Heron Colony

The Torbiere di Marcaria nature reserve is a wetland within a former meander of the Oglio River. More than two-thirds of the area is covered by reed vegetation with smaller stands of sedges. This composition shapes the character of the protected area and makes its plant life a central aspect of a visit.

The wildlife includes a heron colony with several hundred nests. Those interested in wetlands, riverbank landscapes, and birds will find a direct connection with nature here, distinguishing Marcaria from a purely cultural and historical sightseeing visit. The proximity of Marcaria railway station is also noteworthy: the station on the Mantova–Piadena–Milano railway line is located a few hundred meters from the nature reserve.

Historic Buildings in Casatico and Marcaria

The hamlet of Casatico is home to Corte Castiglioni, a building complex dating from the 15th century. It is entered through a closed crenellated gate that once had a drawbridge. The complex is also associated with Baldassare Castiglione, the author of “Il Cortegiano”: he was born at Corte Castiglioni in 1478.

Marcaria’s religious buildings also reach far back into the past. The thousand-year-old, single-nave church of San Giovanni stands within the Marcaria cemetery. The parish church of Marcaria preserves the altarpiece “Vergine e Santi” by Felice Cignaroli, painted in 1767. An even older historical layer is revealed by documents from the Carolingian period, in which Marcaria and Campitello appear as independent curtes belonging to the convent of S. Giulia di Brescia.

Boat Bridge and Percorso Parco Oglio Sud

Another landmark destination is the Ponte di barche di Torre d’Oglio. The boat bridge connects San Matteo delle Chiaviche and Cesole. It was built in 1926, after a consortium from Viadana, Marcaria, and Dosolo had been established to construct and operate the boat bridge. In Torre d’Oglio, this creates a direct connection between a specific transport structure and an unusual construction.

The Percorso Parco Oglio Sud ends in Marcaria and crosses one of the last surviving examples of a boat bridge in Torre d’Oglio. In the hamlet of Casatico, the route also makes it possible to visit Corte Castiglioni. This gives you three clearly distinct points of interest for orientation: the Torbiere di Marcaria wetlands, the historical sites of Marcaria and Casatico, and the boat bridge over the Oglio. A daily bus service to and from Mantova is available for travel to the Torbiere di Marcaria.
