Vaprio Dʼadda takes you to a landscape shaped by cultural history and the Adda river. The Ecomuseo “Adda di Leonardo” provides a broad setting for active exploration. It follows the Adda River for 21 km through Parco Adda Nord; the route is fully suitable for cyclists and pedestrians. Its length makes it a standalone option for a cycling stage or an extended walk, leaving you flexibility when planning your day.

Leonardo and the history of the Melzi family

Leonardo’s stays give Vaprio d’Adda a special historical perspective. Leonardo da Vinci stayed with Gerolamo Melzi in Vaprio d’Adda in 1493 and from December 1506 to May 1507; Villa Melzi d'Eril is connected with this family history. At the same time, Villa Melzi d'Eril is privately owned and not open to visitors. Another connection with Leonardo is represented by the spiral staircase “Vortice”: it connects Piazza Cavour with the Alzaia and was inspired by Leonardo’s genius.

Historic buildings by the water

Several buildings preserve traces of history beyond Leonardo. Cartiera Sottrici Binda is a historic paper mill whose original core dates back to 1774. Casa del Custode delle Acque has been documented since 1542. It stands on the embankment of the Adda River, where the Naviglio della Martesana makes a sharp turn. Villa Castelbarco is a historic villa in Vaprio d’Adda on the Naviglio della Martesana and the Adda River. It is a private event venue for wedding celebrations, exhibitions and events. The paper mill, villa and waterside buildings thus reveal different aspects of Vaprio d’Adda’s historic character.

Forest, river and wildlife observation

The destination’s natural side can be seen at Bosco del Salecc. It lies between the Naviglio della Martesana and the Adda River. Walks and picnics are possible there; you can also observe various bird species and the native, protected squirrel. Bosco del Salecc thus combines nature observation, time outdoors and gentle activity in a clearly defined landscape. This aspect is particularly relevant for couples and families who want to plan time outdoors alongside cultural activities.

Practical visit planning

Chiesa di San Colombano is a medieval historic monument with significant Romanesque sculpture, but it is not always open. For appointments and opening enquiries, you can contact Parrocchia San Nicolò di Vaprio d'Adda at Piazza Chiesa 8 by calling 0290988328. The interactive “Leonardo in Adda” gallery is currently accessible by prior reservation. For planning your visits, it is therefore advisable to consider the church and the gallery separately: an enquiry may be required for one, while visiting the other requires a prior reservation.
