Discover Cilavegna: Churches, Asparagus and Rural Landscapes

Cilavegna combines a plain shaped by canals, fields and rice paddies with the Chiesa Parrocchiale dei SS. Pietro e Paolo, the Chiesa di San Martino, the Aspargiata and traditional festivals.

Landscape of the flat plain

Cilavegna lies on a flat plain at an altitude of 115 metres above sea level. Scattered sandy rises project a few metres above the surrounding landscape. A dense network of spring-fed canals and ditches shapes the plain. Poplar rows, farmsteads, fields and rice paddies are also part of it. The waterways run through the agricultural landscape, while rows of poplars and farmsteads form further visible structures between the fields and rice paddies. The sandy rises create individual points of relief across the wide plain. Those who look closely at the surroundings will therefore encounter not only open fields, but also waterways, rows of trees and scattered farmsteads. The low elevation and the few rises are just as characteristic as the combination of agriculture and water management.

Churches and historic architectural forms

The Castello di Cilavegna is classified as a fortified tower. The Chiesa Parrocchiale dei SS. Pietro e Paolo was built in 1775 on the remains of an ancient Romanesque religious building. It has a single nave with three curved bays and a restrained Baroque style. The high altar is made of valuable marble. The present building therefore stands on an older sacred foundation while preserving the architectural language of the 18th century. The Chiesa di San Martino remained unfinished; only the apse, presbytery and bell tower were completed. The church contains a terracotta altar bearing a statue of the Madonna. At San Martino, the unfinished structure and the surviving furnishings are directly connected.

Aspargiata: Asparagus on the Plate

The culinary side of Cilavegna includes the Aspargiata. This typical local dish consists of cooked asparagus, melted butter, egg yolk and Parmesan. The ingredients are combined into a clearly recognizable local specialty. Both the Aspargiata and the Sagra dell’Asparago continue Cilavegna’s asparagus tradition: one as a dish, the other as a gastronomic festival featuring food and wine.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The Sagra dell’Asparago takes place every year in May as a gastronomic festival featuring food and wine. The Sagra dell’Asparago ends with the traditional Palio dei Maiali. The four town districts of Dosso, Castello, Oropa and Sant’Antonio compete against one another with their jockeys. The Palio is therefore part of the same festival and complements its culinary focus with a competition between the four districts. Another traditional event is the Festa di S. Anna, celebrated on 26 July. The annual calendar therefore includes a gastronomic event in May, the Palio dei Maiali as the festival finale and the Festa di S. Anna in July.
